The cheaper alternative is to just work from home :)
If you avoid one accident because of the snow tires, they've more than paid for themselves; even calling a tow-truck to pull you out of the ditch is expensive.
Here in Minnesota, we have multiple storms a year that each cause hundreds of accidents; I think the extra traction is more than worth the cost.
Most people can't work from home.
