I know I can't just make a silicon chip in my basement or something but I was wondering if there were any commercial services available to manufacturer a silicon chip based on a diagram or something?
Not unless you've got a couple million dollars laying around to burn.

If you just want to cook up some digital logic you can do it on an FPGA, you can buy one and program it at home for a few hundred dollars, I think they run at a few hundred megahertz which should be sufficient for a hobbyist project. What exactly were you planning?

Going to sound a little crazy but I wanted to make a computer chip like the one used for braingate
In that case I think FPGA would suit your needs well. It won't run as fast as a custom silicon, but you could get something going at reasonable speeds. Once you prove your concept then you can decide where you want to go from there, if you think you've got something worth getting a custom ASIC for.

You can buy some cheap student boards from digilent for $50-$200, and use Xilinx ISE Webpack (free) to program the boards. You'll need to know verilog.

A circuit board will not be small enough to fit in an animal's skull...

You should better think about energy source, connectors and so on.Anyway something will be outside. As I understand inside skull must be only analog part of braingate interface. You can use hybrid circuits technology for inner part.It may have a size 5x5 mm and smaller, but you'll need microscope for soldering.

Even then chip needs electrodes on it... Actually if I could find anodes and cathode which were as small as a grain of sand they should work as well.
Braingate for the world!!!!!!

Image the speed I can do web browsing, script writing, 3d modelling, painting. Uh, uh, uh, even watching the internet explorer image make me droll already.

I'll sign up the moment it out of beta.

Come to think of it, how sensitive is the 'thought' games these day? You know, the one that you wrap around your head and play solitaire, and the one that Lucas get angry because they use the word 'Jeni Training' or something. I mean, technology changes all the time.

Is it as good as Dragon Naturally Speaking now? :-)

You probably shouldn't be putting things in animal's skulls... unless you work at some kind of lab experienced in animal testing...

...especially if you haven't proved your concept yet...

Quote of the day!

I'm intrigued, how much thought have you given for this idea? I mean, do you have any schematics to start off with?
