Yes, I know gamedev is pretty much the last place known to man to ask for sleek cocktail related advice (barring pregnancy and how-to-get-your-tongue-in-the-ear-of-an-honest-to-god-living-girl problems), but - what can I say - you're all I've got... and I never needed anyone else.
Jokes aside, though - I was just presented with the coolest task known to man: I need to come up with a selection of super secret cocktails for a large scale private party (eg choosing the ingredients will be up to me and as the cocktails will be super secret, will not be mentioned anywhere).
So, essentially, I have to set up a line of exclusive cocktails for a large party event (I'm thinking 6 in total).
Problem is, I love my rum and coke and I only usually drink more exotic stuff when I have a bunch of ingredients at hand (which is not very often) and I get to improvise. Well, I get to improvise right now. The ingredients are not limited in almost any way - I can have any and all non-million-dollar spirits to choose from.
As a side not, I also have the technology to look up cocktails on the web, but in this particular case it lacks the concrete personal touch I'm after - plus, just Googling is the surest way to be bogged down by TMI. There are a looot of cocktails out there. That's where you come in - please tell me about the awesomest coolest cocktails (both visually and taste-wise) you've ever had and, if possible, please either try to post the precise recipe or at least the name name. I'd like to take these ideas and possibly modify them marginally to produce (hopefully) something unique.
coolest cocktails known to man - let's talk about them
It doesn't really look cool, but long island iced teas taste awesome.
Half a measure of vodka
Half a measure of white rum
Half a measure of triple sec
Half a measure of gin
Half a measure of tequila
Half a measure of sugar syrup (or just add a teaspoon of sugar if you want)
One measure of lemon juice
Mix together with ice and top up with coke.

Is this a party that happens to have cocktails, or a party where interesting and original cocktails are being billed as the main event? In either case take a look at the IBA Official Cocktail list for some inspiration. If you're needing something new and original then take an old classic and play around with it (Do make sure anything new you create gets a thorough taste testing). Do you have experienced bar tenders? If not I'd make sure whoever is behind the bar gets plenty of practice before the event.
I'd second Evil Steve's suggestion of a long island, beware though they are highly alcoholic (Though if mixed correctly don't taste of it at all). I also rather like Mojitos which are pretty easy to modify (Long island is less easy to successfully modify I imagine). The Tequila Sunrise would be another good one if you're looking for something colourful.

whats all this "Half a measure" crap about?
Quote: Original post by RivieraKidYou can double the measures if you want, but that'll either make a drink that's pure spirits, or a pint of normal strength cocktail.

Well, Long Island is a favourite of mine as well - if done well, it's far better than a Cuba Libre. From my perspective, however, generally also more expensive. Sadly, it's pretty well known...
I'm also looking for any solutions that look just plain too cool to be true.
The sucky thing about this is that no, the cocktails aren't going to get much testing beforehand (if any). So indeed, I have to keep that in mind as well. I'm not going to limit myself because of that, however :)
Going over the IBA list right now...

In that case definitely stick with the tried and tested ones. It's pretty easy to come up with a mediocre cocktail (Shaking with ice and adding sugar syrup makes most things taste at least alright), if you use some of the classics off the IBA list you can't go too far wrong.
As for making everything look cool, that's just all presentation, doesn't really matter what's in the drinks [grin] If you want interesting colours lookup 'Layered Cocktails' on Google (Though you will suffer from TMI, maybe just look at all the IBA cocktail pictures on wikipedia and decide which ones you think look the best).

If you want to be a man...
Russian Boilermaker:
Any beer in a mug (preferably a lighter beer)
drop in a shot of vodka
must be drunk in one chug.
My favorite...
Long island iced tea (this is how I make it):
1/2-3/4 part tequila
1 part gin
1 part triple sec
1/2-3/4 part vodka
1 part clear rum
2 parts sweet and sour
1 part coke
I tone down the hard liquor for the ladies. If your easy on the hard stuff they'll come back for seconds.
Very interesting yet extemely awesome drink...
Irish root beer:
shot of jameson's irish whisky
shot of baileys
shot of butterscotch shnapps
fill rest of mug with rootbeer
This drink tastes good. And I mean damn good. If you like root beer you must try this.
