Hi all,
I have spent a good amount of time reading FAQs and documents written by the moderators of this community, and having read a fair amount of them now it seems most of them are targetted at students finishing university who want to go straight into the games industry from their degree.
Much of the advice seems to be 'get/finish your degree, then...'.
Can i take this to mean that i am correct, that most people here are in the younger age group of maybe 16-25 and aiming to get into the industry after they have finished their course, OR, are already in the industry?
I feel the odd one out a little here as i neither in this seemingly average age group (i am 29!) nor am i in the games industry (i am a database/systems developer).
Cut a long story short, do you agree with my appraisal of the situation? What is everyones thought on this?
average age of a GD'er?

According to our most recent poll data most of our members are actually in the 22-30 age bracket.
I'm 25, and I have nothing to do with the informatics industry (hell, I don't even know its name [grin])
I'm 21 finishing my last 3 classes for my degree, however I'm not going to go into the game industry. I think you'll find a lot of hobby developers here and people that like to program for fun without a career in mind.
We typically write the largest volume of answers to the questions most frequently asked; it's far more common for someone to ask "how do I get a job making games" than to ask "how do I spend my evenings and weekends fooling around with making games for fun" [wink]
So just going by the distribution of site content will probably skew your numbers. There's quite a few professionals lurking around here, for instance, but they often don't announce their positions (for various reasons) and/or aren't actively involved in posting questions like the above (for hopefully obvious reasons).

Awww... Only 8.7% for me. I am 17.
That means: I will get my degree, and then... [smile]

I think the poll could use some refinement in the 22-30 option, I mean, splitting it into two parts, since it's the most interesting part of the poll. :)

Same here, I'm 17.
I'm 21. I joined this community when I was about 16. I'm also finishing my final classes in order to graduate with my bachelor's in computer engineering. I love game programming for fun, but where I live there is greater job security in the IT industry (which I will be aiming for). Now looking back at it, I really wish I chose a more 'mature' username than vrok137. But oh well, we live with our mistakes.
