Sounds interesting. There are a few retro games I'd be tempted to remake. What kind of time-scale are you thinking of?
I initially was thinking for a 4-6 weeks time. But maybe an extra more padding would be appropriate to allow any late comers to still have a chance, maybe 2 to 3 months, in this department I would like some feedback to know what would be more realistic for most people.

[Edit] -- I want to clarify a bit what i mean in terms of retro style for any possible participants, doesnt NECESSARILY have to be a old school game, but have an old school feel to it, and in this context old school refers to anything Playstation One and below.

Sounds good, I'm interested.
This would be an excellent chance to flex my 2d lib on a fun little project.

How about an IRC meet for those interested, so that we can discuss the details?
I'm confused on the point of the contest being focused around retro style games. I develop iPhone stuff, and a lot of things I consider making are already retro style. In fact a large portion of mobile gaming (with a large and active developer community) is very much in the retro vibe for hardware reasons.

Would the game have to be based on an actual retro game?

I think that would be good fun...say, run weekly contests where you pick a retro game, maybe something from the MAME collection, and tasks contestants to re-imagine it with a certain spin or just with modern features.

By retro style I mean anything that looks on the surface that it should of been in one of the pre playstation one consoles. It doesn't have to be a remake but if you'd like you are more then welcome to enter one. Remeber one of the key points is that it has to be a retro style game with modern technology, whether its a gameboy looking game with online play, or a playstation game that renders more units on screen then ever possible with playstation, or just a game with special effects that previous console could never handle.

As for the IRC channel If everyone would like to we can try to all talk lets say tomorrow night?, if not I think the forums will be good enough medium for us to communicate. I will be posting all detailed information tomorrow night for all to see, but I think we got a good number of interested participants.

I don't think the 'retro style' should be solely focused on how the game looks. Granted a lot of programmer art is pretty simplistic, there shouldn't be a restriction on what kind of style we can produce, especially when doing 2D.

I probably won't make it to the IRC but I'll keep up on this thread.

I think what defines a retro game is how it looks, Ive read your message about an hour and a half ago, and I cant seem to come up with any other valid criteria for defining what makes up a retro game.
There might be some timezone difficulties with an IRC meet, but since it's friday night I'm all for meeting any time you like. Preferably before early morning here though. :) Give me a time in GMT, an IRC network and a channel. I'll be there.
