Hello fellow GDNetter's its been a while since I've had any time to program a game of my own and I've been craving to get back into it for some time, and because of a change in my schedule I will have alot more free time then usual for the next few weeks. So Iam proposing a game dev contest. The thing I liked most about Gamedev was their four element contest, seeing and playing all the entries and watching as they progress, and since I dont see any are coming up I thought I'd propose an impromptu challenge for any takers, just for fun of course.
My concept Idea is you have to develop a retro style game, but incorporate any elements of the more modern gaming world.
For example you can have a old school type River city ransom game with Online play, or maybe you want to add some special effects that couldn't be achieved in old consoles, or possibly just a very large number of characters on screen at any given time that the old SNES, GENESIS, or even playstation wouldnt be able to handle.
I wanted to see how many people would be interested so we could get a small community going with elected judges and come up with a time frame. So if anyone is even remotely interested reply to see how many people would like to join in.
Game Contest (Any Takers?)
If we can use existing code bases I'd be interested in about a month or 2. I am currently working on a game but I think the code base I have been developing will work for this.
yea of course you could use any prexisting code to help you develop, just the game itself cant be somethign you developed and finished 2 years ago.
Sounds like fun, I'd be interested in trying.

Sounds like fun. How about a small entry fee (think $5 or so) to give the winner a nice reward? :)
I dont know if everyone will actually be willing to pay/able to pay the 5$ entry fee and I'd prefer to have a bigger audience then a smaller one regardless of prizes. But I wouldn't mind giving 100$ of my own cash for the winner if we get participants, I would be excluded of course. I would really just like to get a contest going it'll drive me more to get something good done.
[Edit] - Remember we would also need some judges, so if anyone of good GameDev.net standings would like to volunteer to serve as a judge I would like to hear from you too.

Perhaps you're right. Personally, I wouldn't mind paying if the contest were well-organized and there were prizes to keep you motivated. :) However, I understand that some people might not want to (or afford) paying the entry fee. It just seems a bit unfair for you to have to provide the prize money all by yourself :)

Yea prizes would definatly be a motivation, but I wouldnt mind funding some of the prizes myself I'll probably have more fun using the cash as a prize in this contest then I would on a normal weekend out :-).
