3d in a 2d game

I was wondering the other day if 3D cutscenes deter the 2d game play. To be more specific, this is an RPG. Doing things like the intro and ending in 3d whereas your game is 2d make the player think you''re cheap and that you could have made the whole thing 3d? I have a friend who is into making 3d movies and stuff, but my level of game programming limits me to a 2d rpg, but he would like to insert 3d cutscenes. So there goes the question again: do 3D cutscenes and 2D gameplay make the player think you''re cheap?
No, I think it''s fine. Maybe some people who don''t know much about game development would wonder why the whole thing wasn''t 3D, but anyone who knows a little about it would know how difficult it is to make a fully interactive game. Also it obviously makes sense for smaller teams to concentrate on gameplay rather than presentation, and again I think most people appreciate that.

It sounds fine to me. A lot of games have 3d cutscenes and 2d game play: FF7,8,9 and Fallout 1&2 come to mind.

I guess its a matter of perspective. 3d characters rendered on a 2d background. I don''t think most people would call FF7,8,9 3d games in the traditional sense anyway (the combat was 3d rendered though...)
