i am looking for a free-to-use set of notes, which cover about three octaves. (ideally from a piano, but other instruments or tunes might work too)

yes, that would be the ideal situation.
something like c.wav, d.wav, e.wav, ...

the idea is that in the end i want to procedurally play a tune similar to midi files.

i think that shouldnt matter. in the end i will define the duration myself.

I won't ask you for a reason, which you need these files for, but there are some ways to obtain it.
For example you can easily sample any sound from any vsti plug-in with DISCODSP HighLife plug-in.
So what do you need?
- any VSTi host
- download HighLife from Disco DSP site (it is free)
- load HighLife in your VSTi-host
- load VSTi in Highlife
- choose sound you want to sample
- set HighLife to make samples the way you want (i.e. Low: C2 High: B4, Step:1) - those are notes and step between them
- push Freeze in HighLife
- push File button in HighLife and choose Export Wav files...
... done

Actually, wouldn't you say that there is a good chance that merely downloading a simple sample library with the raw WAVs accessable will serve the OP's purpose?

You can download many samples from freesound.org
Just search for "piano" and you will see.

There are of course some other ways to extract samples by using sample converters or another utilities, but I tried to describe a free way to obtain nearly any sound from any vst instrument.

Yeah man, I don't mind helping you but the thing is, I think it would be a ton easier for you to just go download the trial version of FL Studio and make these yourself. The trial version disables saving, but it won't take long to use the piano on there and render you some notes :)

I just think that would be easier for you that way you can actually control the exact output you're wanting, or you could look for samples like these guys are saying.

But with that FL Studio trial there are a ton of different sounds and it's really straight forward.... if you need any help with it I can help you from there.

yes! that is exactly what i am looking for! the only problem with this zip archive is, that it seems to be missing several notes. for example there is C2 but not D2 or E2, etc...

I could be wrong about this, but I'm pretty sure that D2 and E2 are lower than C2. I can't remember if that's how that works though. The note directly above C2 should be C#3, not C#2, that would be down an octave.
