looking for a good file hosting service

I'm looking for a good site where I can get an account, upload files, and have other people download them. At this point I'm interested in a reasonably priced pay site that never goes offline, doesn't display popups or ads, and generally doesn't have any other issues.

Initially I was looking for a free site but I've come to the conlcusion that no free site will meet my needs. In particular, on the advice of an old thread, I tried MediaFire with basically disastrous results. I needed to store an exe somewhere, download it on site with a client, and demonstrate the app for them -- MediaFire wouldn't let me actually download my files and just kind of spewed popups everywhere. So that's about it for me and free file hosting sites that people recommend.

I used to use a site ripway.com which worked fine except (a) I have feeling I was getting ripped off on its price and (b) it went down a lot given that I was paying for it.
Try Dropbox. You get 2GB space for free and can give other direct links to files in your public folder.

Google docs let you also upload arbitrary files and share them with others.

You should really have hosting in this day and age. You can get cheap hosting from hundreds of hosting companies that offer different advantages and disadvantages. I use webfaction (330 USD for 5 years). I used to use 1and1 which was good until I needed more than hosting. You get a domain name with most of them. I recommend doing some research and pick up a plan that suits your needs.
I use amazon s3. It's dirt cheap. Pay as you go with no minimum. My first bill was $0.11.

That sounds too good to be true. What are the downsides to using Dropbox?

It's only 2 GB for free, they kinda get you to install their client (which in reality is optional, you can use only the web interface) which may be a little intrusive depending on your preferences.

But no popups, overall it's professional and good, lots of ppl recommend it.

Yeah, I'm not interested in installing the client. Also Amazon S3 is overkill for my needs.

Seriously I just want some stupid site where they have a web-based interface, no ads, direct downloads, and I pay like $5 a month or something. Can someone recommend a site like that isn't any kind of scam and that has good customer service?

Like I said most any web hosting service gives you that. I happen to pay 5.50 for what I have, but 1and1.com is like 3.99 for 10 GB of hosting space and unlimited bandwidth. Should be good enough. (I had 1and1 for something like 4 years. Never went down as far as I can tell). Plus you get a domain name so you can do stuff like "Hey check out my game: http://example.com/foo.zip".

Yeah, I'll just do that ... just that as soon as I get a domain name I'm going to want to build a website for myself with bells and whistles and stuff and I really don't need another project right now :)
