I'm sure many of you have heard of Stack Overflow - the programming Q&A site. (And Super User and Server Fault.)

Well the folks behind that are opening up their system for proposals for new sites. There's a proposal for a game development site. All that is needed is enough people to commit to participating in a beta.

I think such a thing would be a valuable resource for all of us. So, if you haven't done so already, clicky!
Seems there is a question from the users on whether this would be used for game programming related questions or just game development in general.

It looks to me like consensus (from the already-completed "definition" stage) is that it's about game development in general, not just programming. Which is good, I think.

I'll wait for GDNet v5, thanks. I never liked the Crap Overflow community all that much.

Fair enough, move along. You do realize that a SO community would differ from a SO Game Development community?

Anyway. A dedicated game development Q/A website would be great. Especially for beginners, and people who just need help getting a shader looking perfect.

There was/is the GameDev Wiki but that seems to have slowed down (or never picked up really).

The idea of Stack Overflow for GameDev was already brought up in the channel awhile back. I think Superpig said how unless theres somebody dedicated to implement it, its hopeless. A few wiki contributors mentioned how the wiki failed and that there's little point past that to try to do this.

YMMV, this would be a good thing if there are imaginary people willing to invest the time into it. A bit of a steep climb.

is there an ETA on that?

At OP, couldn't hurt imo. I always liked the way answers are shown on stack overflow vs a regular forum. A lot easier to find the on topic/most relevant answers.
I've never been a fan of the overly professional, QA-only, no-discussion Stack Overflow format, but nevertheless I do think it's a good idea to at least try. [smile]

What I like about SO is that there's direct feedback so you get fast answers and people usually hash out better answers because of the rating system.

I hope it does well but TBH I think SO/GD.NET are good enough for game related questions as is. Between these forums, SO, and #gamedev I've never had a question that wasn't answered within an hour. The advantage I see is if it centralizes GameDev type questions to one location and it might also cut down on repeated topics (what language should I use, How do I make an MMO, etc.).
