I've just learnt to use Inkscape and I love it, but now I want to animate. I can't afford flash or Illustrator so they're out of the question, but I was looking at something like either the low or mid end version of Toon Boom Studio. Does anyone know a) if TBS is a good match with Inkscape, or if there is a better tool, preferably free but if it's good I'm willing to pay some money, I'm just not rich is all.

I tried synfig, but I think it's too early in development still, none of the help links worked and the UI was not very friendly at all.

Thoughts?
Ok after a lot more thought about my requirements, I think I pretty much only need to be able to underlay the previous frame so I can alter the current frame just slightly. Anyone know how to do this in inkscape?

I think using another tool is pretty much going to be overkill, unless I outright switch tools.

I haven't done much animation in Inkscape; that's something I should be looking into too.

If you're wanting to output a bunch of PNG files of different frames, you can create each frame in a different layer or layer folder. You can adjust the opacity of a layer so it's mostly transparent to use as a guide (that's what I do with rough drafts that I'm working from). Then make only one layer visible when outputting the frame.
Thanks, I actually finally worked that out! I didn't realise Inkscape had layers, for some reason I just thought they were referring to foreground background.
