What? No Dave Chappelle? No George Carlin? No Richard Pryor? No Robin Williams? No Bill Hicks?

Back when I was in college I went into downtown San Diego with a few buddies to check out another buddy's jazz band and Robin Williams staged an impromptu performance in the bar next door. A huge crowd gathered outside to listen, us included. He was great. That was around 1990.

Check this out: Comedy Central 100 Greatest Standups of all Time

I forgot Rodney Dangerfield.

IMHO George Carlin, Bill Hicks and Richard Pryor are 3 of the funniest people ever to walk the earth. Dave Chapelle and Robin Williams are good but they're not in that league.

I disagree, but I will say that Chappelle hasn't lived up to his potential. Robin Williams may be better known today for his roles in movies, but he's been doing stand up since the 1970's. The same could be said of Steve Martin and Whoopi Goldberg.

But that Comedy Central list is terrible. Roseanne Barr above Bill Hicks? Martin Lawrence above Dave Chappelle? and how the hell did Gallagher make the list? Not to mention the utterly heinous relegation of Billy Connolly to 73rd.

In fact, it's a very north american centric list.

I wouldn't say that list is terrible but I agree that it contains several highly questionable rankings. I think it reflects the sentiments of 2004. I agree that it's a North American-centric list. I didn't link to it because I thought it was definitive but because it was a list of comedians and even bad lists get people talking.
