Nerd shows (and a tribute to The day the earth stood still)
Let me start out with a ">tribute to Bernard Hermann (the composer for the original The Day The Earth Stood Still). Only thing that's bothering me in that video is the chap wearing the wizard hat. Really - a wizard hat? Got to love the theremin, though. /random
Now, about geek shows. Generally speaking, anything goes (this includes sci-fi and all that), but in this particular case I'd like to focus specifically on shows that feature geeks as main characters.
Having just watched the first two seasons of Big Bang Theory (which I found to be nothing short of brilliant) and The IT Crowd (which had its small share of laughs, but only made me really LOL so many times), I find myself in a position where my appetite is going usatisfied, yet I don't know where exactly go to look for additional sustenance.
Based on what I've seen I will have to classify myself as a major nerd (not so much based on what I've retained from it all, though): most of Battlestar Galactica, Star Trek Original Series/TNG/DS9, Babylon 5, Stargate, the abovementioned series and, I hate to confess this, all of Friends. I've purposedly steered clear of things like Heroes and the final season of Battlestar (because if, at any point, the maker of a show feels obliged to apologize to its viewers for the show or the solution to an epic space saga is that God no longer felt mental enough to allow things to carry on the way things were going, I'd rather just read a book. Anything by the likes of Bradbury, Salinger or Dick will do. Which isn't to say I'm not open to new suggestions. Truthfully, I'd prefer something similar to Big Bang Theory, although from my current perspective, that seems like a pretty hard nut to crack.
So, any suggestions?
It may be obvious, yet you didn't mention it so I feel I have to – Red Dwarf.

The main characters aren't all geeks but they work in the R&D division of an amoral company and several episodes focus on the geeks in the lab. Only watched a few but going to make a special effort to catch up on this show.
In a wonderful echo of HPs recent "web cams can't see black people" problem (BBC News)I just watched the episode where the companies new motion detectors can't see black skin, thus forcing the company to hire minimum wage white people to walk around with all the black staff.

If a theremin is all it takes, then you've got to include The Beach Boys (Good Vibrations) and if you toss in a wizard's cap, then Led Zeppelin comes in as well (Dazed and Confused or was it Whole Lotta Love?). And let's not forget the theme song to Doctor Who, a character that strikes me as quite geeky in his many incarnations for that matter.
And what about Numbers? Does the presence of FBI characters cancel out the math geekiness? And what about CSI with it's faux forensic science?

True Blood fills the fantasy hole and its pretty funny in places.
I liked 3rd rock from the sun when I was younger.
