To Emulate or not to Emulate.
Hardware emulation has fascinated me for a long time, and I'm confident that I now have the skills to write a reasonable emulator. The question is, what to emulate? Is there anything particularly useful to emulate?
Since I've long been a fan of text adventures, and the 'hardware' is thoroughly documented and simple enough, I am considering the Z-Machine. Then again, despite being done-to-death, I'm sure I'd get great joy out of emulating a NES, and it's made out of 'real' hardware.
Any suggestions?
I found CHIP-8 to be a good starting point. It's not a true hardware system, but writing a CHIP-8 interpreter covers most of the basics of an emulator for a more advanced system and can be done in a hundred lines of code or so.

There was only single good game on the system, Tempest. And the original is just as good, albeit with less shiny graphics and sound.
NES is a far better target if you want to actually have some fun after coding the thing, and there are plenty of implementations to study if you get stuck on something.

Turbo-Grafx-16 (and the other systems), Sega Master System, Sega Dreamcast (good luck though), Neo-Geo, Sega Genesis, SNES, Atari Lynx (for the game I never got to play).
Plenty of goodness to go around [smile]
