Is the Book of Kells nominated for an Animated Feature?
My friend is the lead voice in it:)

LessBread - yeah, I finally saw the trailer for The Ghost Writer and the premise looked really promising. I hope the movie lives up to the trailer though because Polanski is know to be capable of some really horrific stuff.
Really? I thought he was known for making classic pictures like Chinatown and Rosemary's Baby and for eluding justice for three decades. You point to a movie with a imdb score of 6.90. That's very high for a supposedly "horrific" movie. I haven't seen Bitter Moon. Overall, 25 of the 29 films Polanksi has directed since 1957 rate above 6.0 at imdb, and 16 of 29 rate above 7.0. That's quite exceptional.
Check this out: Tarantino will win best picture, if history can be believed.

The remaining movies are Avatar, The Hurt Locker, Precious: Based on the Novel "Push" by Sapphire, Up in the Air, and Inglourious Basterds. Precious and Up in the Air are both R-rated dramas based on books, which looks promising, but with only six nominations each and both being dramas set in the present with running times of an hour and 50 minutes, they can be counted out. Avatar has the right running time (162 minutes) and the right number of nominations (nine) but it's rated PG-13 and it's science fiction (no science fiction movie has ever won best picture and only one fantasy film, Lord of the Rings: Return of the King, has ever won). That leaves us with The Hurt Locker and Inglourious Basterds, both very long, R-rated war movies with nine and eight nominations, respectively. Based on the numbers, the advantage goes to Inglourious because it's a period piece and it's from a studio with an Oscar history, rather than The Hurt Locker, which is set in the present and is distributed by first-timer Summit Entertainment.

Please, I'm gonna try and not get started on how much I hated Slumdog Millionaire, and how much I've seen better movies of the same language! Let's not go there............................................anyways, the slew of Oscars being won by one movie can be expected this year as well. But then again, there are some seriously good movies this year, so it could be a little different..........time will tell.............
EDIT:
Yea, I'd have to agree about the political awareness thing though for Slumdog, cause it was rather dumb..................but hey, it happens, and as for opinion on the movie, I guess to each his or her own!

A case of can't see the forest for the trees?
Personally, for me, it's a very smart movie and storyline. But I do realize too much people focusing on the political aspect of it that they can't notice the interesting storyline. Same for the 'this is an advertisment' camp, (the producing company is the owner of 'who want to be a millionaire' or something like that).
Anyway, for me, personally, IMHO, Slumdog is just like Where the wild thing are recently. Many people don't get it, but those that think really deep will. To understand slumdog, you must understand fate, ironies, predestination, etc. to understand 'WTWTA', a person must understand child and psychology.
Isn't in interesting that in WTWTA Max run from being 'eaten' by a wild thing getting into the mouth (therefore stomach) of another wild thing? if you don't die being in a wild stomach, why worry being eaten? but it's not about being 'eaten'?
It's about possession and control (which why max run) and protection / being protective (which is why max went in into the stomach).
but of course, for those who didn't get it, they was like - ohhh, to scary for my kids. Well, your powerpuff girl kids - that is (of sugar, spice and everything nice). any kid that went through parent divorve, bully, abuse, etc, will know it's hidden meaning.
to go back to slumdog, people that go through life without much hassle for being on the right path (in the right country, born in the right family, at the right time) will not get it. but for other people - who life throw all kind of thing at them, will understand the predistination aspect of it.
Just my ten cent.

I got 6 out of 10 correct.

Yeah, you beat me.
Am I the only one who thinks Coraline was done gross injustice last night? And it wasn't even nominated for Best music (which is just criminal).
I really loved Bullock's acceptance speech - it was totally obvious she hadn't even considered herself winning for a single moment. I love it when that happens to people whose job in life is to keep themselves together and not waver, and then, in front of something like 1 billion viewers, they break down. She did it with grace, though (whereas Geoffrey Fletcher (best adapted screenplay for Precious) just went blank). Too bad a video is not up yet.
Speaking of Precious - it was a wonderful surprise; personally I didn't expect it at all. PS - why do they say "based on the novel "Push" by Sapphire" every time they mention the name of the movie? It's not like it's any different from other adaptions in that respect. Or is it?
To me, Jeff Bridges was a bit of a suprise as well, TBH. Although seeing as he's been nominated five times (the first one being in 1972) I suppose he had it coming. Hopefully, next year they'll get a chance to resolve the Scorsese situation.
Too bad I haven't really discovered a way to see the shorts in advance (at least here in Europe) as usually they get me really going during the ceremony and then I just forget about them.

Ugh.
Avatar only received 3 oscars total, half of what 'The Hurt Locker' got. :(
I'm disappointed.

I was happy for Christoph Waltz, he totally deserved it. If you ask me, Basterds should definately get best directing and best picture; my opinion is it was the best film of they year by a landmark. I am not much of a Tarantino fan, but after seeing this wonderful film twice I think I am becoming one. I hope he continues on that path.
Btw: What the star system and the media is doing to Gabourey Sidibe is downright cruel. I'm quite overweight myself, but she's in a whole different category, a step before being one of those people that need a crew to get them out of their home in order to get treated in a hospital. In an industry where truly gorgeous women are rejected by producers and directors because they have gained a few pounds after they had children, they all pretend that they're not so bad, they accept 'normal' people too, and they do it with the grace of a freak show.
The girl hasn't got any acting capacity to speak of. How could she, she's so pathologically obese that she can hardly use her body to stand up and walk, let alone use it to express subtle emotions. In Precious, she just walked around with a blank face and closed eyes the whole time; she was a bit lucky as the role was somewhat compatible with that, but that doesn't mean no acting is good acting.
When the novelty of it all wears off, and the media gets tired of having their fun with ridiculous stories such as that she is going to be the next 'It' girl(yep, I bet Blake Lively and Sienna Miller are losing their sleep over this), she will have a huge dissapointment. Right now she's getting her kick of all the attention and live on a fantasy world where she wants Justin Timberlake to be her Oscar date, but when it's all over, it will be awful. I really hope I'm wrong and that there will be some movies and roles for her so she can have a future in the industry.

Hopefully in Avatar 2 they can put her in a sidekick role as Ney'tiri's sister. All they have to do is make a custom motion-capture suit, and then they can make a CGI model of her so that she doesn't look so big :)
The Hurt Locker was definitely expected to win best movie this year, cause it really was amazing. You have to see it to know. Avatar did get what it deserved, to be truthful, so no one can say that Avatar was done no justice. I haven't seen Inglorious Bastards, so i won't pass any comments on it..........but I forget now, did District 9 receive any awards?
