About hosting: any ideas there? I think that for now I have enough with just hosting some static HTML pages. I don't want banners or anything though (so I don't think I can use free hosting providers). And of course I want to be able to make my domain name link directly to the hosting provider, so I assume I'll need my own IP address, right? Is that standard?

So basically, for now, I'm looking for hosting static HTML pages, with FTP upload (a one-by-one HTML based upload interface is too much work) and a static IP address.
Apart from the static IP NearlyFreeSpeech offers what you're after at a very good price. I've been using them for a few years and never had any problems. If you need a static IP you'll have to look elsewhere, but if you only think you need it to point your domain at the site that isn't actually how things work and I'd highly recommend them.

DreamHost are also very popular and have pretty good prices, and Media Temple are excellent but more expensive.

I've registered and been hosting two domains with LunarPages for years, and I also have their basic hosting plan and have been using it to run multiple Joomla, Gallery2, and WordPress installs. Haven't really had any problems. It's cheap and they offer lots of space and bandwith, but I can't quite decide whether my Joomla installs are slow-ish due to shared hosting in general or because it's LunarPages in particular. I do get much more spam on my LunarPages email accounts than on, say, Gmail. If I had a need to switch today I would probably go with a host that offer less space and bandwith and that perhaps offers Tomcat.

Depends on your hosting provider. Often this is offered by the provider, then for intance bollux.org will be mapped to zedzeek.com/bollux (so to a subdirectory on your account) but user will see bollux.org in the browser.
