Canadian Hockey Women After Victory The IOC is investigating this...seriously? Apparently they have nothing better to do. I can't even believe this is an issue, especially in Canada. What exactly are they going to investigate anyway? It's obvious they were drinking and smoking and having a good time.
Underage drinking perhaps?

Quote: A number of players, including 18-year-old superstar Marie-Philip Poulin, were drinking alcohol on the ice following the team's 2-0 defeat of the United States. (The legal drinking age in British Columbia is 19.)

Certainly shouldn't do anything dumb like ban them from the closing or anything though. This isn't illegal performance enhancing drugs (quite the opposite).

Poulin scored both of their winning goals. Let her celebrate. Sheesh!

Given that the games were in Vancouver, the IOC should rejoice they were smoking tobacco and not killer green bc bud.

Due to the dominance of Canada and the USA, women's hockey might be cut from the Olympics entirely, just like softball (baseball was cut because the pros wouldn't participate).

To be replaced with pole dancing on ice?
You either believe that within your society more individuals are good than evil, and that by protecting the freedom of individuals within that society you will end up with a society that is as fair as possible, or you believe that within your society more individuals are evil than good, and that by limiting the freedom of individuals within that society you will end up with a society that is as fair as possible.

I can see it now:

"Yes, your honor, I know that I was on camera globally doing something illegal. But it it is okay to break the law because I had just done something awesome."

You cannot get far with the legal defense of "at least I wasn't doing something much worse".

It is absolutely awesome that they won.

To follow it up with globally-visible lawbreaking? Not so awesome.

Couple it with the fact that this is now an internationally-known sports figure. Her first major act was to win, her second major act was to tell the world it is acceptable to violate the law.

It was a relatively minor offense, but that doesn't matter. The results of major or even globally-significant sports events do not justify breaking the law, not even at the Olympics. It doesn't matter if it was a relatively minor issue (like this instance was) or a major issue, it is still not acceptable.

All of Vancouver has been drunk for the last two weeks, and most kids start drinking here when they're 12-14.

The IOC is a joke. They need to fire that entire committee and start from scratch. It's been months of pure stupidity, over and over and over again. The IOC has broken more laws in Vancouver than anyone else.

Ah yes, the "everybody else was doing it" defense. Tell it to the police when you are pulled over for speeding.

Just because other people are breaking the law does not mean it is okay.

Either change the law and make it legal, or respect the law.

I'm curious, if she had her parents' permission and they supplied the alcohol, isn't it not against the law anymore? (don't know canadian laws)

It's called following traffic. You will most likely not be pulled over, because everybody is doing the same. That's the whole point of democracy in the end. If the majority does something and the majority deems it acceptable, then it will eventually become legal. There is a greyzone for an offense which is still officially illegal, but widely accepted by the general public. If you're in that greyzone, then the 'everybody else is doing it' excuse is pretty valid.

Anyway, about the original post. Absolutely ridiculous. It's not as if they were drinking themselves into a coma by guzzling one Vodka bottle after the other. It was beer, geez.
