Please read all of the below bulletins before proceeding to the quiz itself! when you post your results, please also post a new question of your own (or better yet, PM it to me!) - I'll add it to the original quiz (more fun for everyone!) it is up to you to define "cult classic" when composing your question; I hope the original questions are of some help in that respect. The topic can be anything, but has to relate to computers/consoles - preferably games - somehow. Use the original questions as a guide as to how to format yours. when you write your own question, make an effort to phrase it so that it could be answerable by deductive logic - eg avoid being solely fact-based (much more fun that way) when doing the quiz, be fair and do not use any additional resources other than your (own) head (that means: no Googling :) ) be fair when scoring yourself the aim is not to score highest, but to have fun 1. This horror classic was written in the form of a short story named Who Goes There? by John W. Campbell at the age of 28. It was first adapted to the big screen in 1951 and re-made a few decades later, this time with much more loyalty to the atmosphere of the written text. The story, notably before either operating system had been conceived, features - by accident - two characters named Mac and Windows. By what name is this cult classic most commonly known (the name of the remake)? Answer 2. These small rodents are indiginous to the Arctic climate and really do tend to follow a pattern of accidental mass deaths which might seem like mass suicides at first glance. As a consequence, they have featured in a number of computer games throughout the years where the objective, invariably, is to save them from certain death. Name this rodent. Answer 3. The objective of this 1994 Windows/MacOS7-based computer game by Maxis is to collect five stars. Answer 4. The 2009 platform game Trine by Frozenbyte features three characters the player can control: a wizard, a thief and a warrior. Using these characters and their unique abilities the gamer must surmout increasingly challenging obstacles by solving a number of logic puzzles. The concept of Trine, however, borrows heavily from another game that far outdates it - in fact as far into the past as 1992. This original gem borrows its characters (and name) from old Scandinavia. In an episode of season 10 of South Park (2006) Cartman, Kyle, Stan and Kenny undertake the challenge to save a wildly popular game world from total destruction by the hand of a player who has played it for so long that he has become virtually invincible. Name this game. Answer 6. This game franchise has featured turn-based and real-time strategy, space combat and FPS gameplay styles. Although the original series only boasts four games, the first one dating back as far as 1993, its spiritual successors are rich in variety and many, as is its cult following. The objective of the games is to safeguard the freedom of humanity. Name this franchise. Answer 7. A spiritual predecessor to the games TrackMania and TrackMania: Sunrise, this racing game was first marketed as 4D Sports Driving and released for MS-DOS, Amiga and NEC in 1990. It boasted a 3D fully customizable game environment. It, however, has a shorter and far catchier name by which it is better known. Name this game. Answer 8. This franchise has been made into 17 distinct games, one of which is named after the same original material (book) as a film by the same name. Incidentally, this PG-13 rated blockbuster boasts the all-time highest on-screen body count in any single film: 836, according to moviebodycounts.com. Name this franchise (and, if you can, the film). Note: it is not Dune, although technically Dune, the film, follows this particular title with 186 on-screen deaths on the 19th position. Answer 9. This game was originally built on the Quake 1 engine and derives its name from the period of time a substance takes to decay by half. Answer 10. In the 1998 strategy game StarCraft by Blizzard, the female dropship pilot uses, among others, the line "in the pipe, five by five". This is one of several references to pop culture in that game and, in fact, in this case, directly borrowed from a hugely successful sci-fi film in which, while landing on an alien world, the female dropship pilot references their current status with these exact same words. Name this film. Answer 11. This popular, mainly trouble-shooting and promotional, web portal for software and other enthusiasts was launched in June of 1999. The project was spearheaded by five motivated young men: Kevin, Mike, Dave, John and Don. Free for all users, it has become a pinnacle of information and support in its own right. Name this portal. Answer 12. This (primarily horror) director has made two similar films exploring the boundaries (or lack thereof) between technology and human perception. The earlier film is based around television, but features two Atari 2600 controllers and several game boxes in one of its most memorable scenes. The second explores video games directly. Both films feature a repeated line that calls for the death of the particular technology. Name the director and/or the films. Answer 13. This game series was inspired by a well-known theme park ride and in turn inspired the blockbuster movie series based on the same ride. Though the first game in the series was released in 1990, sequels and remakes are still released but not by the original studio. Name the game series.
