Everything is silent about LHC
The last I heard was that half november, the experiments would start again at LHC. It's past half november, and there has been nothing in the news about it... And if I search with Google I find only old articles about LHC. CERN's website also doesn't exactly contain the latest headlines.
A few weeks ago a bird dropped some bread in some external component of the LHC causing some trouble, but they said it wouldn't delay anything.
So now it's a week past half november, does anyone know if anything happened inside the LHC? I'm really curious about it, and especially interested in what impact the things they'll (hopefully) find will have on physics theories.
Cool, that's tomorrow!
Thanks for the LHC latest news link... I feel stupid for not having found it myself. There you can see that they're busy with it *right now*! :)

I kind of forget how the time zones work. When (eastern standard time) can we expect the world to implode?
They have the same clock as me there, and it's 21h05 here now (a.k.a. 9:05PM).
EDIT: Interestingly, the time labeled above this post appears to be 8:49PM (and I set my timezone to my own one in the settings), does the Gamedev.net clock run 15 minutes behind?
Does anyone know how exactly this works? I always thought the particles in a particle accelerator would move near light speed, but in the "latest news" page of LHC it is as if it takes around 15 minutes for a beam to complete a turn (that is the time between a post about the beam going all round, and the post which says "two turns!").

Quote: Original post by LodeDon't get me started about the Gamedev.net clocks. Yes, that's clocks, plural.

Electrons are massless, and thus automatically travel at the speed of light. Non-massless particles have mass, and have to be accelerated just like any other mass. The LHC, of course, is interested in colliding the latter. I assume they're going to drive it around the block before they take it to the racetrack.
Here's a quick guide. [grin]

Um, no. How about electron mass = 9.10938188 x 10-28 grams

You're thinking of photons. Electrons are not massless, and they cannot reach the speed of light. Electron mass.
