What the...?!
Those bomb detectors are British made junk. They cost £30k each and they're basically just like those old school RC car controllers.

Were they actually being made in Britain? I must have missed that.
EDIT: Ahh, it did say ATSC was a UK company. I guess I just expected it to be from Nigeria or something.
Iraq PM orders security reshuffle
It would appear that Jabiri (and his "magic wands") remains in place for the time being.
Quote:
Under pressure over Tuesday's devastating bomb attacks in Baghdad, Nouri al-Maliki, the Iraqi prime minister, has reshuffled the leadership of the country's security forces.
Lieutenant-General Abboud Qanbar, the head of Baghdad security, and Lieutenant-General Ahmed Hashem Awoudeh, the deputy army chief of staff, were ordered to swop positions on Wednesday.
...
In his address, al-Maliki blamed Tuesday's co-ordinated attacks on "foreign elements" that backed al-Qaeda and called on Iraq's neighbours - an apparent reference to Syria - to do more to prevent attacks in Iraq.
...
A senior Iraqi policeman, meanwhile, said the explosives used in Tuesday's attacks were manufactured abroad and that the bombers were backed by groups in Syria or Saudi Arabia.
"This material could not have been manufactured in Baghdad, it came from abroad," Major-General Jihad al-Jaabiri, the chief of the explosives unit, told reporters.
...
It would appear that Jabiri (and his "magic wands") remains in place for the time being.

See my remarks here. A bomb dog would be cheaper and more effective and just as useful in a bluff.
Yeah but muslims consider mans best friend to be unclean :)
Also, considering the crazy things they believe and the lack of good science and information, Im sure that a large percentage would actually believe that these wands are magic. Rattrap, I bet you're not far off the mark.
Quote: Original post by AndreTheGiantThe major schools of thought do consider them as impure (not physically dirty), and thus don't keep them as pets, however they see no problem with using them for work, such as guarding, hunting, etc...
Yeah but muslims consider mans best friend to be unclean :)
Quote: Also, considering the crazy things they believe and the lack of good science and information...Wow, intolerance much? Any of it any more crazy than believing in resurrection, avoiding vaccinations, divine intervention, magic prayers, eternal torture, etc, etc.
Also, are you aware we can thank Islam for much of the scientific method and other important scientific concepts such as peer review?

Oh, did not know that one.

I was aware of some mathematical things like algebra and other great advances but not peer review. In any case I was talking about Iraq (not Islam) being a war-torn country, with scanty education and superstitions abound. I stand by my statement that it wouldnt be a stretch for them to believe in the magic rod as a bomb detector.
PS are you the one who rated me down? Note to self, do not use the word 'Muslim' in a thread, no matter what the context... go rate Wikipedia down too while you're at it, jeez.
Quote: Original post by AndreTheGiantActually, I just un-up-rated you, turns out you were full positive before ;)

And for the record, if you'd implied that stupid crazy Americans with their pathetic education system and rampant anti-scientific thinking would likely all believe in magic rods, I would've removed your positive rating too, even if it is true.
It's not nice to generalise whole populations like that :P

That tells me that dogs would be even more useful in a bluff. If the Iraqi government wants to waste it's own money that's fine with me, but I got a feeling that with these wands they're wasting US tax dollars and that's not fine with me. Moreover, if they can't get their act together, then US troops might have to stay there even longer and that's not fine with me either.

Quote: Original post by LessBreadDidn't they already admit that they don't know where most of the reconstruction/support money has gone (i.e. no paper trail on any of it) anyway?

Quote: Original post by AndreTheGiantYou can have some rating points back, just for that! :P England only started sending their crooks here when you guys rage-quit the empire...

Actually, we're all immigrants these days. Something like 35% of people in this city were born overseas ;)
