Eskil Sternbergs MMO Love
Anyone else playing this?
So far I'm absolutely loving it. The art style, the freedom, the gameplay. Everything is utterly fresh and exciting. The closest I can describe it is if you crossed the older Zelda games with Sauerbraten.
The places Eskil can take this are seemingly endless right now. Personally, I'm very glad I followed it for 2+ years to get the chance to shell out for the Alpha. I might even make an independent donation at christmas, it's just that utterly amazing.

Is it using a profit model yet? I figure it may not be since if it is still in alpha, but it seems that only pay-per-month would really work with it. I don't know what you could offer as far as microtransactions with it.
Pay 3 Euro's to get into the Alpha, and that gives you 30 days of playtime. Given the fun and frolic and pure eye-candy to be experienced in the game, $4 CAD is something I was only too glad to fork over. Hence why I'll be finding some way to donate more at christmas.
If there was a poster child for Gabe Newells concept of "Patronage" for supporting Game Dev's, it should be this game. Its basically a work of art.
I could sit here extolling its virtues all day long, and still be quite unable to explain the feeling of joy and awe it brings me every time I fire it up. It's like I am a child experiencing games for the first time all over again, a feeling that does not go away no matter how long you play it! It does so much differently from the "established" tropes of the industry, and does it brilliantly!

That looks very, very interesting. It might scratch the same itch that Dwarf Fortress scratches for me, but MMO and with lasers.
I'm actually tempted to play this. I watched a gameplay video and it looks like he's come a long way from the earlier videos I saw. I remember seeing his dev video and the idea that he created this cool networking system with his own map editor and everything is fascinating. I'm not sure the gameplay is solid though from just watching that video. (It was from april though). The way he presented the AI and how trivially he destroyed and doged bullets makes the AI seem slow.
I've been playing minecraft recently and that game is just about voxel building and there's a few times I was hoping I could animate or move things in that game. Love seems to allow that level of gameplay along with the building aspect.

I've been playing too and I really love it. I love the idea of an auto-generated world; there's something neat about exploring a place that no one has ever seen before. The art is interesting and the game mechanics are interesting too. It's pretty fun cooperating with strangers to build/design your base.
The game does have a million flaws, and I'm kind of dreading a time when the game gets more exposure, because everyone is going to harp on the flaws rather than enjoying how unique it is.

Paid the $5 for Alpha. As someone who did not "follow" the project throughout it's life cycle (ie someone representing the mainstream gamer), I don't get it. I can't see where I'm going, and I have no idea what I'm supposed to be doing. I can erect trees and put in windows, but why am I doing this?

That has been my impression from the demo videos I have seen. What is the point? What are the players aiming for?
EDIT: I do have to say that I like the idea of smaller communities on each server. That would likely weed out the richard heads pretty quickly, because it may only take a couple of days for someone to get on the outs with every person on their server lol.
