MIT goes MIT
MIT Online - Free
Back in a former life, before I realized being the smartest kid at my podunk school didn't mean I was the smartest kid on the planet I considered an education at MIT. Regardless of whether I had the gray matter I was in no way qualified financially.
MIT has released its entire curriculum for free. MIT license style. While it will not certify you for learning it's material, it has given it to you, along with videos of lectures.
Here is an ancap article regarding some of the implications from an ancap perspective. Specifically it regards gatekeepers of modern education and some possible results of MIT's move.
As an amateur programmer with a few degrees in another field I fully intend to explore some of their computer science curriculum to educate myself and hopefully be a better hobbiest.
I noticed their comp science 101 classes use python. I guess it's time to learn yet another language. [smile]

Hmm, apparently old news. It opened in 2002. Odd that it generated a couple of news articles recently. Oh well, news to me.

This news isn't new is it? Didn't MIT begin this a few years ago?

What is ancap? American Nazi Capitalist Asshole Party? [grin]
Seriously, though, I've read some of North's articles before, but I've not heard of ancap. I think that essay wanders all over the place. I stopped reading about half way through when he went on the tangent about the librarian. I agree with him that this gives MIT an online advantage over CalTech. I disagree with his larger point. The college diploma isn't going away anytime soon.

anarcho-capitalist == ancap. I don't think the accredited degree is going away either. Nor do I think that was his larger point [smile]

OK. Is North an anarcho-capitalist? I thought he was a christian reconstructionist [1], [2], [3], [4], [5]. Given that background, his opposition to "the guild" could just as readily be grounding in the propensity of higher education to lead students to atheism [6]. My remark regarding the disappearance of the college diploma was made in response to this bit from that essay: "This is what the college diploma has always done. It has created a guild that restricts entry by non-certified people. This keeps wages high." Subsequent remarks about the cost of a degree from "Podunk U" support that.

I've been using open courseware for years. It is not nearly MIT's entire catalogue. I HIGHLY recommend the computer graphics course. Good notes, GREAT projects. The code is messy but great to mess (repetative) around with.

Uggg, He is. Some of the stuff that guy advocates is pretty ugly. I've only read him on economic issues, where he aligns pretty well with ancap ideology(I'm not an ancap btw, I just find their stuff interesting)

On a related subject, Academic Earth gives free video lectures from various famous universities. I used it to refresh my knowledge of liner algebra and calculus, and the lectures are excellent (the same can't be said about video quality tough).
Most of the stuff is entry level, but there is some advanced material, specially for CS.
Oh and python good luck with python, I think you won't regret learning it.
