Actually, they're doing pretty damn well when you consider the third, forth, fifth, and six placed companies.

I get about 2.5MB/sec from Steam. I usually download after 10pm, and I'm in the Pacific time zone, so it could very well be that there is reduced traffic to the Steam servers due to everyone else being asleep already.

I'm actually surprised it is that low. The 4850 and 4870 cards are surprisingly good value for money.

Well, look at the actual break down on the numbers. ATI's 4800 series makes up 7.46% of all cards in the survey. That's a fair chunk.

I think it is showing a slight bias toward Nvidia because they hit the market so hard with their 8xxx series.

OP: One thing you might want to do is tweak your connection based on a service like DSL Reports: Tweaks. For a while, my cable internet connection tested as 1-2 Mbps when I was paying for a 7 Mbps line. After adjusting the window size based on that tweak test, speed tests now show my connection in the 7-8 Mbps range.

Actually, AMD/ATI is doing just as well as their competitors pie-slice-wise: Intel has 2/3 of a market, Nvidia has 2/3 of a market, and AMD has 1/3 of 2 markets. I don't know how the numbers for the cpu pie and gpu pie compare, but just based on percents, they're about equally matched.

I get ~100-200KB/s at my apt. With Stardock or GOG I get ~1.5MB. It's pretty annoying actually. Otherwise I love Steam.

At my university I get downloads on Steam ~8-20MB/s.
Thank you for the replies everyone.

at work I used to get close to 8mb/sec with steam, and I live in sweden.

check if your settings are pointing to the right server.

Don't forget to try other download regions. Pick somewhere that is at 3 or 4 am, and try downloading from them.

Steam Settings > Downloads tab > Download Region.

Also, don't forget to set your internet connection speed, it factors into things I believe.

Good tips. Mine was not pointing to the right (i.e Sweden) server! It's substantially faster now (900kb/s), though I guess the time of day also has a considerable effect. I'll try your tip Talroth the next time the download is slow!

Extrarius: Interesting tweaks, I'll check them out! (EDIT: Ah, it says not needed for Vista, which I am running.)
Best regards, Omid
Steam is always really fast for me...sorta like what you talk about, buy a game and it's done in a hour or two.

Also I'm really glad I jumped on those 8800s a few years ago :-D

I've not had to update my machines for a while, triple sli 8800gtx in one [2.2GB VRAM], 8800gts 640MB in two others, 9800gtx 512MB in one, I have a few other machines with ATIs 4xxx and a 1950 PRO, also some lower end 8xxx 7xxx nVidia cards in other machines. I wanted to assemble a decent spectrum, and it looks like the Valve stats are pretty close to my test rig spread.

These valve hardware surveys are always insightful though. I wonder if they have any secret data about steam users [grin] :-o :-o
