Miss Teen South Carolina move over for Miss Teen Santa Cruz!

Her remarks about free food were indeed strange (to say nothing of her comment about slaves on the East Coast). What those of you not familiar with California might not realize however, is that there are fruit trees everywhere. In my backyard, for example, there is an orange tree, a lemon tree, a grapefruit tree, a fig tree, a pomegranate tree, an avocado tree and a persimmon tree. That girl might well have grown up in a house with various fruit trees in the backyard too, leading her to take them for granted. Apparently she never traveled over the mountains from Santa Cruz to Salinas and Gilroy and into the Central Valley where she would have seen for herself the orchards, vineyards and other large agricultural operations that constitute food production today.

As for Santa Cruz - Do you guys remember the 1980's vampire flick, "The Lost Boys"? It was set in Santa Cruz and actually did a pretty good job of capturing the flavor of the place.

Don't forget the infamous tomatoe tree. It gives tomatoes for free, you just have to pay for them to the farmer!

Tomatoes are actually very easy to grow in California. We grow them in our backyard too, along with some peppers. You just have to remember to water them. And if you plant some marigolds along with the tomatoes, you won't have to contend with tomato worms. Last year we grew some watermelon and pumpkin too, not so much to eat but just to see how they would turn out. The watermelon wasn't very sweet. The pumpkin made an ok jack-o-lantern.
