Best $5000 I ever spent.

!!! You paid 5k for that ?! I really hope that's not the usual price for Lasik in the US...

Well I had a friend do it not long ago and she paid about $2500 but not sure which specific eye laser surgery it was since there are various major types I think last time I checked?
"all-laser Lasik" combined with "wavefront-guided" software is supposed to be the best to reduce possiblities of halo's and other possible side-effects of the surgery.
I would do it if astronomy wasn't one of my hobbies since I cannot take the chance of not being able to observe the stars as intended.
Also, my friend has some complications right afterwards where she got sharp pain in her eye and the eye doctor told her it was because she went outside too soon after the surgery and the eyeflap moved or something so you have to be pretty careful afterwards and rest. She's okay now though.
I'm sure in they'll eventually perfect in the near future but from what I've read the whole procedure still sounds kinda buggy and quite risky at least for me.

My surgery was $2800, and $800 for post op care.. which seems kind of steep for post op. But what ever, it's my eyes. I went to PCLI which is supposedly the best possible place to go.

I left the office with non prescription contact lenses to protect the flap the first day, and everything seems to be going well. I started moving to my new house the day after my surgery, which is pretty miraculous.

I'm with moagstar. Eyes very normally degenerate with advanced age, and I'm interested to see how 20-year-old Lasik will affect that degeneration.

That said, I'm pretty blind (-4.50 in both eyes, very slight astigmatism), and I sure would appreciate not using contacts any more...

You're far from blind. My left eye is -10.5 and my right is -9.5.

Trust me mate, you have a long way to go before you're blind [grin]

I'd like to do it one day, but I think I prefer the type with no cutting on your eyeball, 100% laser surgery with a laser tracking at 10KHz or whatever it is.

PRK? They use a chemical to remove a layer of cells from your cornea. Then laser it. No flap. How ever, with that procedure you'll have very poor vision for the first few days. The doctor said if you get that procedure that you'll question whether it was the right choice. It's painful and takes a long time to heal (like 6 months). With lasik (the flap) you are technically healed within a week to a month. If you need to have a correction made, you can get one within months. With PRK (non flap) you need to wait a year or so.

It was a pretty obvious choice for me once i realized i was a lasik candidate. I have 8mm pupils, not dilated. The largest possible pupils for lasik.
I might want to do lasik in the very distant future. But for now, my contacts take no more than 40 seconds to clean and put into my eyes, and I hardly notice them throughout the day. The only time I really notice them is very late at night when they've been in for too long.

Treatment option: stitch a band (The "Smart Eye Band") around the sclera of the eye and and bring the retina closer to focus. What about insane astigmatism?

I'm seeing very clearly, it's pretty bizarre, almost painful to see this clearly.

My eyes get really dry at night, it's not safe to go anywhere with out eye drops or i feel like i wont make it home alive.

I've also started to "push my glasses up" more and more now. I didnt try to adjust my imaginary glasses once the first day. On the second day when my phone would ring i'd do the usually glasses push up as the phone went towards my face. And later that night i'd try to take my glasses off before i went to sleep, and every time i roll over i'm like oh my glasses are... wait a second..

So bizarre. It's like a super power really..
