Why is remote desktop like molasses on a LAN?
hmm I tested RDP with windows 7 from my computer to my brother's a few days ago. We're both using windows 7 and using the wireless router in the house. Runs perfectly. Maybe older versions of RDP act differently.

Make sure you disable all the unnecessary things such as wallpaper, high color, remote sound, themes, etc. (under Options).
Yes have a look at this to see what sort of things you can do to increase performance:
Remote Desktop Performance
Personally, the only times I've noticed a lag even using my slower 802.11g wireless is with high resolution backgrounds in Vista and playing video, dvd, etc. For most ordinary stuff it's usable enough using the defaults so it sounds like you might be having a problem with your router not playing nice with the RDP protocol or something?
Of course this assumes you are using the latest version of RDP with Vista or higher since it's way improved over older versions:
o Windows Vista to Windows Server 2008 with the RDP 6.0 compressor is up to 30 percent better than Windows Vista to Windows Server 2003 depending on the scenario.
o Windows Vista to Windows Server 2008 with the RDP 6.1 compressor is up to 45 percent better than Windows Vista to Windows Server 2003.

I'm using RDP in Windows 7 between two computers on a wired LAN, and it runs lousy (despite the bandwidth settings set to highest).
The CPU usage hovers at around 3%, and there's more than half the RAM available, on both computers.

oh yeah and I didn't mention this before, but sound streams pretty well too. I was playing music when I tested the RDP and the music was playing on my brother's laptop. He's too busy. I want to run another test with a higher bandwidth setting and see if I can play L4D from his computer.
