I think that the MMORPG addictic idea is best. Being a "social" zombie himself he starts fighting "real" zombies, I like the ironical touch. As a game-aholic he is just blind to the "real" danger and feels himself just playing an other MMORPG.
The first thing he did after all his clan mates started yelling in the ingame-chat "zombies, omg, there are all zombies stop playing...": he got to the ingame bank, got his holy armor set and retrieved his level 50 lightbringer sword ;-)
Too far from reality he just can't distinct between real danger and hallucination, a coke will be a healing potion, a crowbar his holy lightbringer sword and the top of a garbage can his tower shield. He has to rescue some pricesses (old mrs. willow) and encounters the zombies more with soundbite talking (like old duke nukem) than with fear.

Help me think of an original protagonist
Coke? Bawls is the way to go. The original gamer drink.
But I really like the idea of him being oblivious to the real dangers of zombies. Combined with various real game elements, his belief in extra lives could become totally surreal when he actually does have some.
