Blender: Noise function on a sphere

Forgive me I'm a bit of a beginner at Blender. I was looking through this tutorial (http://www.linuxgraphic.org/section3d/blender/pages/didacticiels/paysages/didac3-ang.html) about using the noise function to make landscapes out of a plane. I was wondering if you can do the same thing on a sphere to make a simple asteroid. My attempt turned out like this: http://img145.imageshack.us/img145/8186/ast.jpg As you can see, it's moving all the vertices on the Z axis only; what I need is for it to move each away from the centre of the sphere accordingly. Is there a simple way to do this?
I'm not sure whether it is possible with that noise button or not but try this:
1) Create a cloud texture and name it "NoiseTex":

2) Apply a Displace modifier, use NoiseTex as texture :


The result should look like this:
