Almost all of the high profile viruses have exploited bugs in Windows that Microsoft has already fixed months before the virus/worm is released.
I honestly don't feel bad for anyone that gets infected. Windows defaults to automatically downloading and installing updates. There is no excuse. The only way to get infected is to use a pirated copy of Windows.

Doesn't Microsoft allow pirates to download security updates anymore ? (AFAIK they didn't require WGA checks in the past for critical updates)

I don't know. I have a copy of XP that has had the # of times it's been activated go 'over the limit' so I have to call and talk to someone in India every time I reinstall it. It won't let me access windows update manually. I think it may automatically download updates, and you can download and install service packs from the manual .exe distributions. My guess is pirates probably turn off updates as it will install WGA and other nagging crap otherwise.
