Are you satisfied with the games currently out?

I wanted to know what the gamedev communities perspective is on games that have been released within the last 10 years, or when you feel games have started to look photo-realistic or close to it. Do you feel we need more games of a certain genre and that it should be made a certain way? What kind of game(s) would you really like to see on the market? I personally, am not really satisfied with the games out right now. I'm into 3rd person action games, fighting games and some 3rd person shooters. For these genres I have looked up a lot of gameplay videos for the various titles available and a lot of them just look horrible(whether it be because of the camera position, animations, gameplay, slowness of the game, etc.). Also, I find that a lot of today's action/fighting titles contain fantasy elements such as juggling opponents in the air, jumping high in the air, such cosmetic effects as weapons that leave a colored trail of light when swung, unrealistic blood effects and damage that is not left on the body. As well as gameplay stuff, like quick-time events. Basically, I want to see a good game with the opposite of the things I mentioned just for once. Something like a martial arts action game, which has co-op and melee weapons, that you can use. The objects in the environment could also be used as weapons or be potential hazards. Pretty much the only type of genre I have seen that looks pretty realistic and doesn't have any of those cosmetics I mentioned is, FPS's(even though there are exceptions). Also, even though I'm not crazy about this type of genre, I am open to it, as long as the game atmosphere suits me, which none that I have played have. Fantasy is ok but sometimes a change is good.
This seems more appropriate for Game Design, to me, but I'll let it stay here for now. I can move it if you want.

Yeah, I wasn't exactly sure where to put it. Thanks.

I'll be satisfied when Fez comes out. I'm just bored with the current AAA titles. More innovation would be awesome. That's why I love the indie games. So in short: I'm not really satisfied with most AAA titles, but I'm really loving the indie games.

I totally share your opinion Swordmaster.
Most games these days are just way exegerated.
Some of the best and most fun action/shooter games have been the (more or less) realistic ones. Splinter cell comes to mind. One of the best games that have ever been made.

The unrealistic ones are usually totally overhyped and not half as fun.
Assassin's creed for example. One of the reasons I dislike it, is this sci-fi stuff which just doesn't fit there. Fantasy in most medieval themed games is already bad enough, but sci-fi paired with a medieval setting...

What you say could also work great for role playing games. Take all the fantasy and magic stuff out and make it a realistic RPG. Fights would be done via melee weapons and bows. No magic, just hands down combat like we know it from movies like troy, gladiator or braveheart. Now that is a game I would love to play.
But I'm afraid it is never going to happen, because everyone seems to think that RPGs and fantasy/magic can not be decoupled.

Personally, I like turn-based stuff, particularly strategy and RPGs. However, there are few of these games anymore. There seems to be this strange notion that turn-based = old technology, so its not really fashionable anymore. I'm tired of realtime, but its all we get anymore.

Also, the differences between most games seems very small. Maybe the textures are changed, or the story for game 'x' is cliche 'y' while game 'a' is cliche 'b', but the gameplay isn't really all that different. Its not enough to keep me interested for long, or worth spending $50. Its just more of the same old 'been there, done that'.

Did you try Mirror's Edge (constrain yourself however, and play like it's supposed to be played - WITHOUT shooting anyone )...

Mirror's edge is actually a pretty good game. I agree on that.
A bit short and gets old after the first playthrough, but it is still something fresh and quite enjoyable.
No I'm not. It isn't so much the lack of innovation, but but more the general laziness and missed opportunities. Most indie game developers will never ever get the budget like the people behind games like Brawl. So I get incredibly frustrated that they chuck opportunities like that away, no decent online, poor balancing etc.

Overall, I am jaded with modern games. They are all the same and are just desperate to make money. I know it's a business, but I can't help but be upset when I have invested so much money in to it, that I can't even have the whole game (RE 5, I'm looking at you)

Innovation would be nice, but there are some games: Dawn of War 2, Mirrors Edge has already been mentioned. Hell, even Gears 1 was innovative in how it played out. However, I am bored of it because they made the second one's story so un-compelling and the online so broken.

So yes, I am not satisfied :P
