MMO Gaming Terminology Dictionary
I started a project over at Bright Hub to build up a dictionary of MMO Gaming terms. Right now it is broken up into three sections: MMO Gaming Dictionary - Combat TerminologyMMO Gaming Dictionary - Character TerminologyMMO Gaming Dictionary - General Terminology What do you all think of the idea, and how am I doing so far? What else would you add?
This is more of WoW terminology than anything else, but it's a good start for that.
Yeah... I don't like how you call it an "mmo dictionary" and then pretty much include WoW terms and that's it. WoW is far from the only mmo in existence.
Also this isn't really game design related...

Probably the wrong forum, but an interesting anthrolinguistic endeavor in any event. I'd agree with the others that most of the content is current WoW-speak, but so much of that is derived from past generations of RPGs and MUDs and what-have-you that what's really needed is a bigger focus on etymology.
The tone could use some adjustment, since stuff like this:
If you want it to look like a dictionary, try to use more specific language, fewer clunky examples and a more professional, less verbose tone. Here, take a look at HoT:
Heal Over Time - noun. A Heal Over Time, or HoT, is an effect that gradually restores the target's health throughout the effect's duration.
HoT - See Heal Over Time

Quote:makes it look more like an editorial and less like a reference.
Early MMOs focused very heavily on crowd control as something necessary for success. WoW and more recent MMOs seem to ignore crowd control and focus more on pure DPS. This is a shame because crowd control is an interesting and challenging tactical element of combat

Quote:That's not great. It starts out with a negative definition, telling us what it doesn't do, and then there's an example that takes up 60% of the definition, uses the term "tick" in a context that would be baffling to the sort of person who needs a dictionary for MMO terminology and doesn't really make the idea more clear. How about this:
HoT - Heal over Time. Powers of this type do not heal you all at once. Instead they apply some amount of healing periodically. For example, a HoT may heal you for 100 points of health every 10 seconds for a total of 10 ticks. That would mean 1000 health healed over 100 seconds.
