Help on choosing the right genre
Hello all I know this site is very informative for us new designers and developers. I am a concept artist my self and of course i have a passion for creating games. I have a working experience on a online game but now that i am standing alone to put my game on the paper i encounter some problems. Its not something important but i have made a series of character development etc and i thought about creating a game with all this gathered concept. I stuck on the genre. Its about a Sci-fi project aiming to give the player the feeling of universal traveling in the map, while handling a Player.Like he is lost in space by mistake, while he found himself on a strange place(another universe) He also have a small robot companion. I want to include funny dialogs(limited, cause i also want serious ones) to pass some ideas to the player I dont want to include elements that suggest alien civilisations as bad ones(hostile), at least not at all, and that makes me wonder about the battle system. Its like including adventure type(no battle) and a battle system in the style of action rpg(in 3d enviro, not diablo like) Thats quite confusing for me.Because as i have my concepts i actually cant form somethings cause i dont know the exact gameplay yet. All this was gonna be easy for me if i had to encounter only one style. I had some thoughts about final fantasy style, but i am not exactly sure. Every feedback will be great. I would be happy to hear every opinion.I will respect your experience on the field. (try to imagine the gameplay and tell me how is gonna be better and more fun to depict a player going on universal adventures from space travels and meeting strange new civilisations) thnx for watching :D
Maybe you should think about how combat will fit into the overall game structure first? It sounds like you want a game where the player finds themselves transported to someplace they've never been, so what's the deal? Are they stuck there and the aim is to explore the environment and see how they fit in, or are they mainly seeking to find a way home? Do you even need a combat system? Is it something you as a player will be doing a lot? Is it possible to structure the game so you don't need to engage in combat?
nice post.
Actually your questions making me see the things more clear and by answering these to myself i will keep building it.
Yeah i realise that i need to form a strict aim.I think i will use the "trying to find our way back" and he and his companion will need to travel all the maps before returning to the final level "our home" maybe to tell the story(but maybe a strange surprise will await him in his home)with the last i can even introduce a game which includes part 2 game.
Thnx

I don't think you're stuck on the genre. You've decided on sci-fi and a space setting.
Many of the aspects that are important to you such as funny dialog and a companion would work in any genre.
The thing you're missing is the goal of the game. What is the player ultimately trying to do? Reading your post you talk about 'trying to find our way back' but that's still kind of hazy.
You have the cart before the horse. Come up with a goal and solidify it and I think it will help you immensely in the decisions you're trying to make.
