SCIFI: Any other comics similar to WatchMen?

Hello everyone, I thought I considered myself being a well-rounded scifi fan having read Asimov's robot series,Zahn's Star Wars, Philip Dick's novels and other classic ones. However I've never heard of Watchmen until I saw the tv commercial. After reading the entire episode, I was mind-blown! I can't believe I missed out on this thing all this time! Multi-tiered stories, a very realistic look on heroism/vigilantism applied in a historic context and shows what really happens long after the hero saves the princess. This got me thinking, are there any other comic books out there that has this same level of complexity/awesomeness? Thanks P.S.: 4 more days before Watchmen movie arrives! Get hype!

The entire episode? Hero saves princess? Are we talking about the same Watchmen?

I think he means what happens to hero when there's no one left to save. Its a metaphor. When the princess is in danger, everyone wants a hero, but when she's safe, the hero is useless and gets pushed from everyone's mind.

Granted, until this post I haven't heard of watchmen so I might be completely wrong. I just watched the trailer and it looks pretty cool. I'll definitely go see it.
Two more from Moore: V For Vendatta and From Hell, the latter being his best work. Shade, The Changing Man is a criminally under-rated masterpeice from Peter Milligan, and I also recommend his Enigma and Human Target (none of these are fully available in collection, though). And from Grant Morrison, check out Doom Patrol, Animal Man (every bit as good as you would not expect it to be based in the hokey name), and The Invisibles.
How can you talk about Alan Moore and not recommend Promethea?

'Cuz I didn't like it. I think all of his ABC books fizzled out after their first six issues or so.

Watchmen is over 20 years old, it along with Miller's Dark Knight Returns launched dozens upon dozens of "me too" comic books...most of them pretty poor.

At the same time Japanese manga was just starting to creep into comic book stores...Lone Wolf and Cub, Mai the Psychic girl, Appleseed are some noteworthy titles there...particularly Appleseed if you are a science fiction fan.

Including Miller's The Dark Knight Returns 2? [smile]

Maybe I'm spoiled, but I just finished reading Watchmen this morning (in preparation for the movie) and I didn't particularly care for it.

Hey now! The less said about Miller's DKR2 the better [wink]

I respect Watchmen, but don't care for it all that much either.
