Character development culture

The measuring and comparing of exact abilities would be one aspect of it, but that's something we can pretty much do now. The cultural impact I'm mostly referring to would be the pursuit of self improvement.

Yeah, here are my exact stats, and that might impact my culture. But what's important is what I'm doing right now to better myself for the future. If I'm building houses, then I'm building houses to improve my construction and creativity abilities, not to make money. If I'm working a crappy clerk job, then I'm not trying to make ends meet, I'm using the customer interaction to tweak my social skills.

If I go with it, though, I won't present it as such an optimistic cultural endeavor. A cold and materialistic culture is more desirable for a cyberpunk setting.

My real curiosity in this is how well it would work to present a game world culture influenced by the concept the player is most likely playing the game for. Other than gameplay, character development is most likely going to be the biggest incentive to push through the game. With this cultural aspect present, taking on quests would no longer need to be blind acts of kindness. I want to help you with this quest or activity to increase my dexterity and strength, not because I have nothing better to do.

I'm still not sold on the idea myself. But I appreciate all of the input.
Would personally rather avoid a cold and materialistic cyberpunk setting, but have I previously mentioned my idea where all players start out neuter and have to earn masculinity and femininity (or stay neuter)? I think I did mention the similar idea where all characters start as boring looking scrubs and have to earn 'beauty' both in terms of physical appearance and in terms of clothing. I think having masculinity, femininity, and attractiveness as 3 additional stats to raise could improve the variety and realism of a culture that was about raising stats.

I want to help design a "sandpark" MMO. Optional interactive story with quests and deeply characterized NPCs, plus sandbox elements like player-craftable housing and lots of other crafting. If you are starting a design of this type, please PM me. I also love pet-breeding games.
