Importing to 3ds texturing issue

Hi, I just downloaded some free 3d model from internet and I am completely new with 3d studio max (I am using 2009 version). I want to import the downloaded model (.obj, .gsm, etc), but after import, there are no texture like rendered image in those model's website. Is it supposed to be like that? Should I put my own texture, or is there something missing? Thanks
It depends on how the original modeller created the archive.
Most often only texturecoordinates are given in the modelfile, while texturemaps are for the user to provide.
