Question about Game Audio Programming by James Boer

I recently finished reading this excellent book on game audio programming by James Boer. I have understood most of what he's written about, apart from one small thing. In his music scripts he always loads a DLS file before loading any segments, but the DLS file is never used in the script. I have been trying to find out exactly why he does this, but I don't get it.. I hope someone can shed some light on why a DLS file needs to be loaded into the script like that.
I think that's a sound bank. It probably just sets up the sounds properly on the sampler or sound card.
