New to Maya - Append to Polygon Tool doesn't work

Hi, I am totally new to Maya; in fact, my reason to use it is just doing my homework for the Computer Graphics class. Our homework was to read the Maya's "Lesson 1 - Modeling a polygonal mesh" tutorial and to do what it says. It tells how to build a helmet step by step. At the "Adding polygons to a mesh" step, something has gone wrong and it seems that I am stuck. Here is the screenshot: http://img225.imageshack.us/img225/6625/errorug7.jpg I simply can't build a correct polygon between this two edges; at the same time Maya warns me about the "bad topology" of the object.(Something like "Bad topology, edit the object at your own risk") I need to build the face shield of the helmet at this step of the tutorial and I am doing and have done exactly the same what the tutorial tells but somehow the "Append to Polygon Tool" doesn't work. How can I fix this? I am in a serious need of help because the deadline is tomorrow!:) Thanks in advance
That screen shot is kind of confusing, it'd help if you snap some shots from multiple angles.

I can't tell which edges specifically you're talking about, but it looks like you have geometry that ought to have been mirrored but wasn't and you have a mix of tris and quads, which is why Maya is complaining about bad topology.
