if you have cash to burn, maybe you should consider a Cintiq :-D . (That's like a combination of a screen and tablet)

A cheap tablet is better than drawing with a mouse, but you're not going to get the degree of control and subtlety a quality tablet gives you. Go cheap if you must but you're better off saving your pennies for something good. Anything in the Intuos range is good, 6x8 is more than enough room for a hobbyist. I've been using my Intuos2 6x8 for years, I love it with an unhealthy passion.

Yeah a cheap bamboo is way better than a mouse. I just bought one and as an added bonus it comes with photoshop elements 6 and painter essentials!
The drawing area is kinda cramped though.

Indeed, I work with a Bamboo, and its almost perfect. But sadly its slightly too small for my full drawing or 3d sculpting space. It has a pretty nice driver and has the options to change its sensitivity and such. Although with some buggy programs it can have its pressure sensitivity not work, overall im liking it for the price I got it :D

Although I would much prefer and Intuos, had a graphire before this but that was because it was the cheapest tablet I could find and I wasnt sure whether or not I was going to like drawing straight onto the computer. It would suck to spend a ton of money on something and find out you dont like to use it.
