I've been browsing the sound effects sites for quite awhile and am underwhelmed by a lot of the sound effects. It seems to be turning into a massive time drain. For example I'm looking for an explosion sound effect and can't for the life of me find a decent one, after hours and hours of searching. The ones I've found are wimpy and poor quality. An explosion effect should have some punch and rumble. Im using a stand-in sound (from a computer game) that truly rocks, but I wouldn't have distribution rights for that sound. The poor quality of most sound effects definitely becomes apparent when you try them in-game, its almost laughable. I'm fine with paying for royalty-free effects of good quality, but I'd like to be able to sample them, especially having gone through so many duds. I guess I'm asking if anyone has come across free or for-sale combat-related sound effects that truly rock (in your opinion), vs. the millions of wimpy, poor quality sounds that I've been subjecting my poor ears to. I know its a bit subjective, but still, it's fairly obvious to me when a sound effect is decent quality, and something that would fit into a combat-oriented game. I think it would be helpful to us all.
