Half an idea

Hi. I recently had (half) an idea for a puzzle game. The aim is to clear a grid of various coloured crystals. You do this by clicking on crystals. Depending on the colour of that crystal clicked, some small effect will occur, say a few crystals are added to the grid. After clicking on this crystal, all the crystals on the grid would shift around the colour wheel. (Red-> Yellow-> Green-> Cyan-> Blue-> Magenta-> Red) This is all very well, but how on earth do I go about deciding on the effects of the colours, and more difficult: How do I make the puzzles once I have decided on this? All help is appreciated. Thanks.

If you can't come up with your own ideas, borrow ideas from others. Go play Bejewelled and a bunch of similar games, take a little from here, a little from there...
If none of that works, hire a game designer.

Hmm. I was thinking a little more complex than Bejewelled. And I don't see the point in hiring a game designer. Thanks anyway.

It was half an idea.

Badgerigar, it sounds like you just haven't fully developed it yet. Before you decide on the effects, shouldn't you determine a gaol? Maybe it's too complex to have so many colors...three's always a good number. Might be too few, but you can work out the details later. Maybe I'm wrong, and the effect of purple could be the combined effect of blue and red.

The thing is, your idea is so abstract, it could be anything! I could see it as an online chess type thing, or maybe the combat system in an RPG, maybe even a resource management game! I see what you mean by "half", but that's not the half of it. I only feel like I read a quarter of a game.
Build a quick prototype and start experimenting to see what works well and what doesn't.

Ok, well it sounds like a good idea to start smaller and build on it. And I also like the idea of colour-mixing. Thanks for the help.
