Just a quick idea: We all know them, and generally hate them. They are the bunny hoppers; those delightful players in pretty much every genre who panic in combat at believe that by hopping rabidly in a circle, they won't die. Well, let's solve this in a decent and simple manner. (Especially aimed towards the MMO). Flagrant repeated hopping gives you a nice little debuff that prevents you from jumping for 10 minutes. I think it would prevent this sort of behavior, and since MMOs don't actually ever USE the jump feature anyways, there are no negative effects. What do you think? Brilliant? Stupid? -Humble Hobo
Many FPSes solve this by giving the player "stamina" for running and jumping that slowly regenerates. They make jumping take huge chunks out of it.

I think that if a ability is too good to let the player use you should just remove it from the game. Generally I find it annoying when fps's suddenly decide they want to be platformers anyway. Stamina seems like a good way to meet half way though.
If you can't use the jump for a gameplay-related function, it's just an emote. Make the jump animation consist of stopping, holstering your weapon, squatting, hopping into the air, and then holding your arms up like an olympic gymnast. That'll teach 'em.
I don't see what the problem is myself. Either the game is a realistic shooter and this should have been dealt with already (with the aforementioned stamina strategy) or it is a fundamental part of combat, like in Halo. Just because it might be annoying, grenades are annoying as are sniper rifles from a long range, but that is just part of the game.

I think thk123 has it right. Either it's supposed to be realistic, and therefore you design mechanics around it, or its a valid combat strategy. Any penalty has to make sense, as would stamina or ICC's anim delay. I think a debuff would just be too arbitrary, like the senseless penalties some Counterstrike servers used to use if they thought you weren't moving fast enough or were too lucky with X shots in a row.

People jump because a better strategy doesn't exist for whatever they're trying to do. If it's grenade evasion, maybe they need to be able to pitch them back. If it's sniper evasion, they need ducking, tumbling or mirrors or whatnot.

If you put in strategies that are far superior to jumping (and which happen to preserve the look and feel of the genre you want) I think they will soon come to dominate and most jumping will disappear.

Stamina is annoying, and I don't think it fixes the problem anyway. In Halo 3 jumping is generally a bad thing because it gives away your position, makes your movement predictable and makes aiming more difficult. Smart strafing with the occasional jump is a much better tactic, and intelligent players know this and will beat a jumper every time.

For an FPS: Stamina meters generally seem to take away from the fun of the game, IMO. I've only ever seen one FPS ever do stamina right: Firearms Half-Life. If you go the stamina route I'd advise you to take a look at it. In FA, you could still bunny-hop if your timing was good, and it had its place, but generally only when you were suiciding a grenade and needed to get real close. Aiming while jumping was a joke; there was a very hard viewkick that threw your aim out of line mid-jump.

For an RPG: The number one thing I hated about Diablo II was the stamina system. I can't think of any good reason to use one. Since jumping doesn't matter in the course of the game...why let them jump?

Your penalty is basically the same as the stamina system. If you stamina goes to low you can't run or jump only walk. If you jump to much your stamina goes low and you can't do it anymore.

The bunny hopping people i find a just good for target practice and don't find them annoying at all.

But i do agree that if its not a functional part of the game its an emote and you could give it some stupid animation that would make it useless to use as a strategy.
