Original post by JasRonq I can see detectors as strap on devices for each joint used that work similarly to the wii detection system. Thats about as far as I think that idea can feasible go.
What the brilliantly-monikered "little Hitler" suggested is essentially a MoCap getup. Feasible but too expensive and cumbersome for mass market.

That's what I thought of as well. The motion capture I've seen has the actors wearing a black skin tight body suit with white markers for the important joints, with an array of cameras in a circle to record their position. You don't need to strap mechanical devices to the actor, which is good because you don't want their movements be hindered.
But it's still too much for anything commercial. It's fine for a large studio who can spare the cost of all the equipment and can dedicate an entire room for motion capture, but it's not the sort of thing for home consumption. And the need to wear a body suit makes it too awkward for arcades.
What about a forcefeedback sword? Could be doable, although the power consumption would be tremendous, in my opinion. Just have three sets of gyroscopes running at the extremities and in the middle of a "swordhilt" in the three directions, the gyring movement generates momentum, and when brakes are applied to the gyroscopes, the resulting force stops the player movement in the opposite direction. All this would take to work would be three times three gyroscopes small enough to fit in a handle of fair size, and a battery that can be attached to the body, with the cable that runs along the torso, shoulder and arm. I don't even know what the power consumption would be though, and for how long you could play with it.
I've read about a new b attery type that would last ten times more. It could be interesting to have that to make this forcefeedback sword, though... Hell, maybe even something along the lines of the "automatic" wristwatches could be mounted inside, and generate just enough electricity to keep the gyroscopes running because you DO swing the sword around...
