Responsive Variable Music / Ideas
Well, i'm on a personal voyage to become a tier 4 composer, but in my free time i do alot of electronic music.. very experimental, i'm just about to get into theory and such but i thought i'd share some new tunes/ideas with you.

This is somewhat what i enjoy doing when not assigned to any specific styles, it's based in a 'futuristic' kind of game, where the played just entered a cave, and ended up in an overgrown 'lab' of sorts, and funny things start happening.
On another note, i've been playing around with some ideas i had in mind, where a song consists of four parts, and every part loops seamlessly until a specific variable has been met.
In this case,
Shiro - Osiric.mp3
http://shiro.loffel.org/mp3/Projects/Situational%20Ambience%20Project/Osiric.mp3
1.First part
You're strolling around looking for things, finding your way etc.
Time : 00:00-00:30
2.Second part
You've noticed a guuard, an event or something else that might harm you if discovered
Time : 00:30-01:00
3.Third part
Guard or event has seen traces of you, and is searching/calling teammates
Time : 01:00-01:30
4.Fourth part
You've been spotted! You've got to run, they're shooting at you and calling reinforcements
Time : 01:30-02:00
Ofcourse there would have to be some cleaning up on the fading and such, but i felt like i needed a subtle change so i added frequency changes and fade-ins for the full mp3.
Any thoughts, pointers or feedback on the subject is greatly welcome!
I like your first sample, the second not so much. My main observation is that the sound comes across as repetitive well before the 30 seconds is up, so you may want to come up with something with a little more variation before looping. On a personal note, I really don't like that 'chirping' synth on the counter-beat — it just feels unpleasant on some basic level.

I really like that 2nd idea, and also your execution of it. I thought it was pretty good. I think I've played a few games that had something of that sort, and I think it's a very enjoyable effect when done right. A problem with it, though, is that if it's not done properly, it's very noticable and it subtracts from your immersion/enjoyment. You really have to make it not very predictable (i.e. using the same sequences in many places or for a long time probably makes it predictable, especially if the sequence can backtrack, if for example you hide out for long enough).
Anyhow, just wanted to comment on that. I'm also curious what tier 4 is.

What is tier 4? Genuine question btw.
Nigel Tufnel: The numbers all go to eleven. Look, right across the board, eleven, eleven, eleven and...
Marty DiBergi: Oh, I see. And most amps go up to ten?
Nigel Tufnel: Exactly.
Marty DiBergi: Does that mean it's louder? Is it any louder?
Nigel Tufnel: Well, it's one louder, isn't it? It's not ten. You see, most blokes, you know, will be playing at ten. You're on ten here, all the way up, all the way up, all the way up, you're on ten on your guitar. Where can you go from there? Where?
Marty DiBergi: I don't know.
Nigel Tufnel: Nowhere. Exactly. What we do is, if we need that extra push over the cliff, you know what we do?
Marty DiBergi: Put it up to eleven.
Nigel Tufnel: Eleven. Exactly. One louder.
Marty DiBergi: Why don't you just make ten louder and make ten be the top number and make that a little louder?
Nigel Tufnel: [pause] These go to eleven.
Hahahahaha. I love that movie! :)

Well, what Blaise Douros said probably sums it up pretty well. You need that extra bit to appeal to the masses.
A wise man told me that a tier 4 musician, is a guy that's both very educated in alot of styles, genres, etc. And he's -also- interested in gaming.
Thus he surpasses the first tier, which was basically only musicians.
The second tier only continued their work, possibly interested in gaming aswell.
Tier 3 are the Hollywood musicians, or in other words, the very very educated ones, that might not be very interested in games at all.
Most game musicians you see in headlines today, Inon Zur, Koh Ohtani, Jesper Kyd, Rom Di Prisco all share a love and interest in games, as well as being throughoutly educated.. I believe these people to be in the Tier 4.
Oh, and about the song being very repetetitive, i'm aware of that, it's just a really really basic jotdown of my idea of variable audio.. I've read that surround sound helps alot in doing these kind of things, but i'm not there yet.
Thanks for the feedback though, i'm glad someone's interested at all to be precise.
(Oh, and the wise guy is the musician for Mortal Online, he's also the one that recommended me what to study, and it really broadened my views alot)
On another note, you might've heard my old 'Credits' tune some time? I've revamped it now, with more dynamics and transitions, a nicer flow and better samples.

[lol] Your wise man just gave me a good chuckle. "Tier 4", now that's funny. Gotta remember and use that on a session somewhere. I can't wait to look at some colleagues on a recording date and say, "That was good, but I'm not sure if it's up to 'Tier 4' standards."
So why is it that when the "Tier 4" guys get a decent budget, all they can talk about is how exciting it is to work with the "Tier 3" guys? [wink]
No, i don't mean it that way, i mean it in the way that you need both the 'hollywood knowledge' and the 'heart for games'
Tier might be the wrong word..generation perhaps would be more accurate?

Stick with the name of composer in my opinion :)
These sort of terms are nice for analists and people who like to give everything a name tag. In the end it turns out that mostly the description doesnt work.
Example: Hans Zimmer (not so good educated in term of conservatory diploma's, but very succesfull) - is he qualified enough in terms of education in the Tier 3?
Second example: me! good education (3 master degrees in music) and a passion for writing game music and also writing music for movies. Am I Tier 4? Don't think so since I am not famous, nor established and just a starter in the game music world (heck, I don't even have a Tier 4 piece in World of Warcraft :P)
See my point? You can shoot holes in this sort of naming easily. You can leave out Hans Zimmer and count me in. Does that give a rightfull impression? Don't think so haha
Skip the naming and call yourself composer and work as hard as you can with all your passion you have. That is what people would like to see.
Good luck in the great journey! I will give your music a listen this week.
