iPod Touch FTW?

I'm thinking about picking up an iPod touch for my mobile enjoyment and to replace my laptop for mundane things when I'm walking around conferences and at local game development events. Plus it's cool for reading books, watching movies, etc. Of course I plan to unlock it so I can fill it with cool stuff. I'm still on the fence. If anyone would like to offer up their opinion as to whether I should purchase one or not, I invite your comments!

Are you talking about an iPod Touch, or an iPhone?

Anyway, the Touch doesn't have enough storage for the music I listen to all the time. I pretty much fill up a 60 GB iPod 5G with all music, so for me the Touch is out before it even got started.

As for a simple machine to bring with you to conferences, have you considered the Asus Eee PC? $199-$399 for different configs, has little keyboard, screen, WiFi, etc. Runs Linux.

Touch. I have at&t and convergence has its uses but I like my phone to be a phone still.

Holy crap that's a lot of music!!! I'd barely use it to listen to music so no problem there, the storage isn't an issue for me

I guess "replace my laptop" wasn't a good thing to say huh? [smile] By that all I meant was a way to easily surf the web, check my email, play videos, make notes and check my schedule without having to drag out my notebook (if it's even with me). Obviously a Touch isn't going to fully replace my notebook, haha, but

I'm not looking for alternatives either. I don't want a small laptop, and I don't want a smartphone, so the Touch seems the perfect fit. I'm just looking for a good reason not to get it, in case I haven't thought of something.

I think the iPod touch is a great device. I bought one for the significant other, and she loves it. I'm thinking about picking one up for myself, especially since I'm not really a lover of laptops. It's the ideal form factor for a mobile computer. Re storage, I think 16 GB is plenty for daily usage. Some people feel compelled to carry their entire music collection with them, in which case the "iPod classic" is a better buy. Neither you nor I are such people, so the iPod touch works for us.

I think it's an excellent choice and, depending on your usage habits, I actually think it can replace a laptop. Maybe I'll grab one and try them out at GDC, lugging the laptop around one day, then taking just the touch the next. Wanna pick one up, too, so we can compare notes?

Alright, you got yourself a deal :P Guess I'll be making a stop off at Best Buy today to put all those Xmas gift cards to good use.

Well, the 8GB Touch is now mine. I've unpacked and fondled it to my heart's content. I'll be hanging with a friend tonight who'll be showing me all the cool things I can do with it. Time to step up Seyi [smile]

i have a 8 gig touch it gets the job done. for internet and youtube its amazing, just get close to a wi fi connection and it asks you if you wanna connect. you need to get a update that is about 30 $ for email and quick notes. but for scheduling and just uses like internet and entertainment its great (no games tho)
That is why you jailbreak it.

Ah! I carry a Blackberry (classic form factor, none of that Perl nonsense), which I used to detest, but the e-mail/schedule/GPS integration is just so good! It doesn't do web multimedia, but I don't feel a big need for that -- when I want to get down for real, I use a lightweight laptop (because I like to write code during spare moments).

Horses for courses.
