heh.

Okay, then, some games have it. Still glad to have raised a question. BTW, anon, you''re right in one sense, most RTS aren''t actually murderbased (which I would define as actual rewards based on no other factor but elimination). But it does get people''s attention. Ah, gotta love anonymous posters!

As someone mentioned be4, RTS''s are too fast paced to be able to implement spies in, at anything above the most simple level.

Instead of using spies on the battle field, there should be a campaign map between fights where intelligence is gathered, and diplomacy takes place. Red Alert had a campaign map, but all you could do was select the next battle. It could easily be updated to add spying and diplomacy.

That way, there would be time to do more interesting things with spies and diplomacy, as you don''t have to worry about fighting the enemy, guarding your base, construction, production, and resource gathering all at the same time, while expecting to be able to use spies in an effective manner. Also it''s a bit late for diplomacy while in the actual battle.

hmm didn''t realize that would be considered a personal attack, I guess my tone was a little off. Can''t type much because I am in pain but from your posts in the past it seems as if you do not like games. Perhaps you could (in another thread if that is how they like it here) in a post describe your favorite games and the stuff you like about them. Oh and I''m anon because I don''t come here much and partially as a protest agaist the evil nature of ubb itself. Forum format has a surprising influence on forum dynamics.
This forum is not UBB. It uses UBB codes because they are well-known around the internet, but it is proprietary code written by the wizards here on gamedev.

Anon,
he doesn''t hate games. I''ve noticed when you enjoy something, you complain about it the most

i´ll answer them all in one:

1)because we´re lazy

2)because managing a war AND spies AND politics is boring

(anyone ever play Star Wars: Rebellion? play it and you´ll understand. It was not because of bad implementation, it was just not fun to to all the time... it came down to two ways to win your war: either you had a big fleet and whacked em - unlikely, as a big fleet takes long to build up, or you had your spies and saboteurs everywhere and won by crippling him from the inside)

3)murder is fun

4)murder is easy to do
by ubb style I didn''t mean those codes similar to html, I meant with regards to the overall forum format. All the posts are in one big line, instead of a branching tree structure. A tree structure makes it possible to go off on tangents without getting shouted down by cries of "off topic" or "too short", since it doesn''t interrupt people since they don''t need to read your posts. It gives more flexibility, it have a much lower barrier to entry. The overall effect is that ubb style forums tend to become dominated by perhaps a dozen core members. and instead of being inclusive they actually lose population over time. Threaded forums on the other hand encourage people to put a post in every now and then, anyone can jump in and talk without disrupting the regulars. Also you can switch from topic to topic faster in a threaded forum, it doesn''t stagnate as much. The best forum I''ve seen is a compromise. The main forum index looks like ubb, but when you click on a post if brings you to a threaded section. It is wonderful.
Since this is the only GameDev forum that I''ve frequented for more than two days in my life so far, I''d say they haven''t done a bad job! But this is not the place to discuss the technicalities of the forum really I have nothing to do with those anyway.

RTS, this.

Historically, wars are not run entirely through slaughter. Sure it''s a large aspect, but I put this to you: In your average Strategy Game, where are the spies? Where are the alliances and political manuevering? Where are the spin doctors dreaming up propaganda to boost the moral of the troops and civilians?

SEVEN KINGDOMS.

Play this game. It has spies, politics, alliances... everything!

you can train spies and make them infiltrate enemy towns, steal technology, assasinate the leaders, slowly cause propoganda to make the townsmen angry with their current leaders, etc.

Politics: you can make and break alliances, trade with other towns, set up routes, tariff''s, donate money and technology, declare war, ask allies for war help, etc.

this game has it all, and never sold well because it wasnt a simpleminded game. It took thought, and thats what killed it.

sigh...

Don''t tell me placing spies wouldn''t be fun gameplay if properly implemented. Or Waiting until the crucial time until you inercept an enemy courier? Or laughing sadistically as your enemy acts on false orders you provided?

Part of the reason things are so murderbased is lazy design. but civility can be fun sometimes, it''s just harder to design effectively. So stop being lazy, and listen to hypocritical old Landfish!

My earnest prayers Which do importune thee,
With gloomy shade of thy still empery,
