8600gt sli or 8600gts
A few months ago I built a computer. My last computer had a geforce fx 5200 graphics card :). So when I built my new computer I bought an 8600gt and it was a significant improvement. Now I realize that for about 20$ more I could have gotten a gts, which I hear is much better than the gt.
My question is, is it worth it to buy an additional 8600 gt and take advantage of my sli mobo or should I get a gts and maybe in a few months get a second gts?
How will 8600gt sli perform relative to an 8600gts and 8800gts?
8800GTS should mop the floor with 8600GT's in SLI. But, if you already have one of the two cards, it would be a lot cheaper to just buy another.
Personally in your situation I would just live with what you've got until the next line of cards and a price drop comes, unless you can return/resell it. 8600GT isn't a bad card overall, it's just bad in relative terms to the 8800 line.

So what would be the best one to get, I mean from a price/capabilities perspective? I need to upgrade soon, and I was shocked to see some 8x00 cards for less than 50 bucks.
Try to keep it under $200 per card, thinking in a future SLI upgrade [smile].
Well an 8600gts would only be 20$ - 30$ more than the additional xfx 8600gt that I would buy. So I guess I will go with the 8600gts
edit: just to let you know - stay away from those 8000 seris cards that are 50$, if you are playing games that is.

I've been reading the forums for the past half hour or so and all I've seen people is recomending 8800GTS' and I don't know why people don't recomend the GTX version if someone could enlighten me as to why that is I would be grateful seeing as I plan on buying one and don't want to waste the money.

The GTX is awesome, considerably more so than the GTS. It's also several hundred dollars more expensive which is really not cost effective since the only thing in the near future that will challenge a GTS is Crysis (but even then, the recommended spec for that game is a 640MB GTS).
If the GTX gets a big price drop, say when the next big card comes out, it might be a good deal. Right now it's just overpriced and unnecessary.

it should, but it doesn't, the 8600 GT's actually outperform a 8800 GTS, the only problem is the extra fans make the SLI setup much noisier, and from what I remember a beefy power supply, which can't be good for your power bill either.

I'm 15 so I don't pay the power bill :D.
I think that I might just wait until the 9000 seris cards come out and there is a price drop in the 8800 seris cards. Right now my 8600gt performs pretty well, but it just seems weak compared to my friends' 8800s

I bought the 8800GTS over the 8800GTX because I figured the GTX was overpowered for my poor 19inch monitor - no ultra high resolutions meant no need for the extra power. The GTS can pretty much run any game at max on resolutions like 1280x1024.
