Where to start?

Heres what ive done Ive done game programming before. I took the Q2 engine, plugged in opengl enhancements but ive never coded them myself. I got pretty good at modifying game physics etc but everything was already there. Heres what I want to do I feel like my next step is to make something from scratch. I want to make a 3d racing game with SDL/OpenGL. Im basically making an engine from scratch. I dont quite know much from there though. What level format should I use? What model format should I use? What should I do to start off? Yes... im a n00b.

Um, your next step is to code the OpenGL enhancements and plug them into the Q2 engine (or do the same/equivalent for another engine). Creating an engine from scratch is several steps further.

Good idea. The Q2 engine is fairly dead tho. Maybe enhance the Q3 engine?
