2D animation sprites

I'm hoping to create a 2D game. My question comes in the form of what program should I use for animating the sprites. I like illustrator and I might buy it but what I don't like is that it seems kinda hard to do animation with. I could be wrong (I'm learning right now with a 30 day trial) I know flash is big for animation but I don't know if you can save the frames as bitmaps so I can later make it into a dds or similar file. I want something that will let animating running or similar actions easily. I really like illustrator but I don't know how easily it will be to see the fluidness with it. I guess I could make each frame a layer and mask everything behind it (that conflicts with the new frame) and just make the layer on top visible to get a rough concept of the animation. I don't know, any ideas?
Technically speaking you could animate the sprites with anything, like Microsoft Gif Animator (or AVI Creator from Bloodshed software). Though if your looking for program that has built in animation support you could try GIMP.

well yeah. I wasn't even looking for something that would make an animated file type, like a gif. Just that it would aid in seeing the frames on animation. I could easily flip between one frame, click play and see my motion but still would be my main source of my art. And would also allow me to save my pics as bitmaps for my sprites.

I'll definately check out this program that you suggested though. Thanks.
I think Toon Boom is probably the industry standard, but there are a lot of dedicated 2D animation programs out there. I recommend doing some Googling and downloading some demos.

I also recommend a book called The Animator's Survival Kit. Seriously, buy this book. It's worth far more than the $20 you'll pay.
