Basically Autodesk are at it again, this time mudbox is becoming theres... http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/item?id=9931455&siteID=123112 Anyone else feel like there monopolising the 3d software market just a little :S?
Looks like they're pulling a Microsoft, which doesn't seem too bad considering there are still other 3D software companies out there, so it isn't a monopoly (yet :-D ). Maybe the new trend is buying each other out now (Adobe->Macromedia, Autodesk->Alias,Mudbox, etc).

Now if AMD or Intel (or say AMD or nVidia) buy each other out, then we'll have to worry.

Autodesk Signs Definitive Agreement to Acquire Skymatter, Makers of Mudbox 3D Brush-based Modeling Software

Linkified.
3D still has a lot of competition in it, especially since autodesk stuff tends to be extremely expensive. Mudbox was the underdog against ZBrush anyways.

If this buyout means better integration of mudbox with max and maya, that would be awesome. It's not entirely impossible either. I mean, Flash is much nicer to work with since Adobe got a hold of it.

So I think this buyout is at worst not going to change much, and at best may help to improve high-end 3D workflow.

You probably would never have a need to export Mudbox files as an X file since they're usually several million polys.
