Is an online soccer game cool ?

Maybe.

depends... if it's done right then it would be great, but with pes and fifa around i don't think any independent football(soccer) game designers will get too far.

Not as cool as an online ice hockey game.

Does it have hooligans? It should.

They should trash the place if their teams loses, and they should absolutely tear it apart if they win.

Why not recreate the professional football structure?
The makers of the game sell "virtual clubs" for real money. The people that buy them also manage them, and can pick from people who play for free (or get paid by the person who bought the clubs).

The way to make it work is to make one player play as one footballer, not a team like pro evo or fifa. The player has a career-life ie begins at 16 and ages to 30 over a year.

Until we all get big tvs, you'll need to overlay the radar over the whole screen. Trust me youre eyes will adjust - tried it with a space fighter - 5 minutes then youre switching focus between radar and pitch like you've always done it.

You'd need the pro evo engine though. Its too perfect to bother trying something else unless you wanted to be more abstract?

Definitely a good idea, but hard to achieve.
I play PES6 on PC, and I'm very disappointed by the online mode:
- People disconnect when they lose, and that does not affect their stats.
- It's impossible to select the skill range or see the ping of your opponents.
- Lag can change drastically from one period to another within the same game.
Other than that, the offline mode is very good.

Sometimes I really wish I had the source code of the games I buy. Achieving the gameplay of a game like PES is impossible for a single developer, but improving the "lobby" part of the online mode feels very feasible.
